Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.
Thank you.

Wikimedia Commons has a specific scope
[edit]
Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.
If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding. Sdrtirs (talk) 02:08, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Put it in an appropriate category, and there will be less chance for confusion... AnonMoos (talk) 02:36, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Please do not recreate deleted images
[edit]
Your image or other content, Image:Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.jpg, was recently deleted in accordance with our process and policies. You have recreated this content after it was deleted. Please do not do that. If you would like to contest the deletion, please visit Commons:Undeletion requests and follow the instructions there to have the deletion reviewed.
Recreating deleted content outside of process is not a good idea, and doing so repeatedly may be cause for you to lose the privilege of contributing here. Thank you for your understanding. Sdrtirs (talk) 05:09, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Xufanc, you have reuploaded an image after it was deleted for being an obvious copyright violation. As I see, you have already previously been asked to stop this. Please do not continue uploading images with unknown copyright status, as this behaviour might result in a block. Please do not reupload unless you have a source saying that this image is free. Also note: de-wikipedia is not a sufficient source for this image. Best regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 02:36, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:33, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

File source is not properly indicated: File:VonTschammer-Hitler-Breslau1938.png
[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:VonTschammer-Hitler-Breslau1938.png, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
:File:VonTschammer-Hitler-Breslau1938.png ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File:New York YC.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Copyright status: File:LotImg59117.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:LotImg59117.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Category "khao tom"
[edit]Category:Khao tom is a bit of a problem because khao tom in Thailand actually only refers to the rice soup and not to the dessert that is khao tom mat. How about renaming the category to Category:Khao tom (dessert)? - Takeaway (talk) 06:11, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Sao Mamede
[edit]Hi Xufanc,
I noticed just now, with great surprise, that the Spanish and English Wikipedias state that Serra de São Mamede is part of Montes de Toledo. I wonder who invented that, because I was born there I have never heard such a thing (although not being a geologist or geographer, I am not a complete ignorant of Geography). I can't find any sources to support such a bizarre claim. You can see in any Spanish map (like this one) that Montes de Toledo is near Toledo and it is separated by more than 300 km of plains from São Mamede. That story sounds much like "Frankenstein" to me.
Anyway, I congratulate you for organizing things in those galleries/categries.
Regards. --Stegop (talk) 18:42, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, I trust you, but I still find it very strange that not only I had never heard such a thing, but also I didn't find any academic work mentioning it. Regards. --Stegop (talk) 01:46, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Cicadas for dinner...
[edit]Hi Xufanc, I'm guessing that image was actually made in Myanmar -> File:Wa-cicadas5515.JPG. - Takeaway (talk) 20:28, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
- Oh wait, I saw that you were in Yunnan at that time. Although it might be used for making something similar to a nam phrik, I don't think it's correct to categorise it in that category as nam phrik is used for Thai dishes only. For that matter, it might as well be categorised under Category:Sambal which is the Malaysian/Indonesian variant of nam phrik. I'll go look around on Commons to see if there isn't anything better. Cheers, Takeaway (talk) 20:37, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
- Actually the image was made in Mae Sai, at the Thai/Myanmar border. I know very little Wa language, my Wa friends speak in Thai with me and they call it 'chakachan nam phrik'. That is the reason why I could not think of another word to use. I happen to be now at another end of the country, but I will call them tomorrow and elucidate the matter. Today I had literally no time.Xufanc (talk) 14:27, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- Aha! That the image was made in Mae Sai completely changes everything! I have heard of "nam phrik chacachan". I believe that is also, if rarely so nowadays, eaten by northern Thai people, albeit probably with a slight change of recipe. I'll re-categorise the image to reflect this new information. I'll also change the summary to state that the image was taken in Mae Sai. But seeing that the image only shows you the cicadas but not the actual nam phrik itself, it really shouldn't be in the nam phrik category but only in the "food ingredients" category. Regards, - Takeaway (talk) 15:47, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for the insight Takeaway. I had not thought about writing on Wa cuisine and this has encouraged me. I had a talk today with one of my Wa friends and was told that the word they use for Nam Phrik is "Klax" (the 'x' being a glottal stop). Also that their cuisine is very similar to (or has been heavily influenced by) the Tai Yai Cuisine and that the Tai Yai cuisine is like the Northern Thai cuisine, except that it is limited by the poverty of Shan State in our times. They consider the Thais wealthier and that the wealth has introduced changes in their cuisine, but that their traditional cuisine was identical in the past. They are very conscious of the difference between their (Shan and Wa) cuisine and Burmese cuisine and they don't cook Burmese dishes at home. Basically their cuisine is marked by the general poverty. The basic staple is rice and the main accompanying dish would be Tom Chuet. In their village the Tom Chuet would be only having vegetables in it (phak), green leaves mainly, of different species mixed, cabbage too and sometimes pumpkin, if bones are there, the better. No meat, except on special occasions when a pig or a chicken would be killed. Animals are usually killed for special sacrifices and then eaten. I'll try to get a picture of the nam phrik chakachan. I think I have one somewhere. I actually ate it in Chiang Rai with a Wa family and, if you don't think about what it is, it is very nice. I am glad to find someone who finds these things interesting. There are quite a few more interesting things, but maybe I should write them in the corresponding article. Cheers, Xufanc (talk) 12:19, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

I'd love to read about it but, and here's the big but: how will you be able to write that article without engaging in original research? I have been walking around with the idea of writing an article about Akha cuisine now for a few years but there just aren't any sources available. I even have a bunch of photos of Akha dishes already uploaded, which include their Akha names, but I can't do anything with them (see Category:Akha cuisine in Thailand). For your information, I believe that the Akha name for "nam phrik" is "sapi". I regularly eat insect dishes in Thailand although I stay away from tadpoles and frogs out of personal disgust of anything amphibian. I don't see much difference between insects, spiders, prawns or crabs actually. If anything, most insects are much cleaner being eaters of only vegetation, whereas crabs and prawns are bottom scavengers eating even feces. We indeed share the same interest for Asian foodstuffs. Please feel free to involve me in any future project. Regards, Takeaway (talk) 16:51, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- I found some sources on Wa food. Not much, but at least something to build upon. Perhaps there is something about Akha food as well. Some aspects of the cuisine, for example, such as that they don't use coconut milk can be referenced by the fact that coconuts don't grow that far north, although other tropical plants such as bananas still grow. This is something that I got from my friends but there should be literature available supporting this. Its a shame that those Akha food pictures are sitting there without being used. Hello!
Thank you for uploading File:Sultana Razaaq,(India) Silent film actor and director.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. - The image was made by an unknown artist in the 19th century. It is widely used in texts on Manipur, such as Early Meitei History - Religion, Society & the Manipur Puyas by Rena Laisram, as well as in blogs such as this one: My Manipur. There is little else to say about it that is not already in the file description, but you may want to contact User:Madan lmg who was the original uploader in Wikipedia. Cheers. Category Olifants River (Western Cape)
[edit]Hi Xufanc, thank you for creating this category a while ago. There is a little problem with it: Even just within Western Cape province there are two Olifants Rivers. The picture now in the category all seem to be from the one in Namakwaland near Cederberg. But there is another one in the Klein Karoo near Oudtshoorn. That is actually the one I was looking for, but there doesn't seem to be any image matrial yet. I'll tag it on af.wiki as something people might want to take a picture of. Hopefully somebody local will. (Not me: I am in the US..)
Could you move the existing category to something like (Western Cape - Namakwaland)? I'm not sure how that works here.
- Thanks

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Flag of Wa State.png
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Flag of Wa State.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
