Basket?
[edit][1]: Would you really consider this a basket? Looks like a bag to me, and that's what the museum's label calls it. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- It's a basketry bag — twined corn husks. These and sally bags are both basketry items from the Plateau. Meriam-Webster's first definition of a basket: "a receptacle made of interwoven material (as osiers)." -Uyvsdi (talk) 17:55, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
Indigenous peoples of North America
[edit]Hi,
While I understand the value of dividing up categories of Indigenous peoples into country categories, would you mind also leaving them in Category:Indigenous peoples of North America? Placing them only within a country is an implicit statement about their sovereignty. In addition, it might just be nice to have a category with all of these groups/nations/peoples together. Thanks - Themightyquill (talk) 13:23, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
- My thought was that Category:Indigenous peoples of North America with hundreds of categories was impossible to navigate. In wikipedia categories of individual tribes, e.g. en:Category:Tohono O'odham, are not listed directly under en:Category:Indigenous peoples of North America, but their articles are. There could be Indigenous tribes of the Americas under Category:Indigenous peoples of North America. But do whatever you want; I just wanted try to provide a system for what was essentially hundreds of unorganized subcategories and images. -Uyvsdi (talk) 18:02, 1 October 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi

The Cow Boy
[edit]You don't cite any sources for your edits of the information about Grabill's photo of "THE COW BOY" which claim that this is a picture of Claude Stratford-Handcock. Generally Wikipedia articles are expected to cite reliable sources. 216.128.233.152 17:42, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Senor Cuete
In 1887 there was no internet, radio, television, or any other medium for information other than the newspaper. Newspapers told who was in town from a distant ranch, who had a party and who attended, who was getting married, who has too much to drink and landed in jail, etc. In short the papers told everything about everyone. An example of this is Grabill. You can find many articles that mention him in the papers in Aspen, salida and Deadwood. The earliest mention of Claude Stratford-Handcock at the Wyoming newspaper project, http://www.wyonewspapers.org/, is in 1904 when he asked the court to appoint him as executor of an estate. This is 17 years after Grabill took the picture of the cow boy. This is surprising if he was in Crook County in 1887.
Online searches of the Wyoming census records don't show him in either 1880 or 1890. This is surprising if he was living in Wyoming in 1887.
The strength of the identification of the cow boy as Fletcher Fairchild is that he looks exactly like Fairchild. Perhaps your family or some library in Crook County has some pictures of Stratford-Handcock that one could compare to the cow boy.
I am as interested in the identity of the cow boy as you - Fletcher Fairchild was my great grandfather. I'm not telling you that you're wrong, only that it would be good to come up with more evidence to corroborate your story. For someone interested in history or his family such hunts are always interesting.
I went to the Newberry Library. The Elmo Scott Watson papers contain an original print of the cow boy with the text on it as reported in the article. 216.128.233.152 19:32, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Senor Cuete
By searching for Stratford-Handcock I find that a C. Stratford-Handcock, presumably Claude, is mentioned as early as 1889 in the Sundance Gazette. 216.128.233.152 19:44, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Senor Cuete
- Calm down. I'm the person who added the information about your great-grandfather (check the history of the file). I left the pre-existing information on the page, because I didn't have adequate citations of the individual's identity, only your word. -Uyvsdi (talk) 02:11, 2 June 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- I'm calm. I don't think being interested in this subject and researching it makes me anxious. Also No, I AM THE ONE who wrote this article and added the information about Fairchild and Pierce - (check the history of the file). Couldn't those front slashes be replaced by line breaks as they are on Grabill's picture? Couldn't all three supposed identifications be put together in one section? The identifications of the cow boy as Fairchild and Pierce are cited, it's your identification of the Cow boy as Stratford-Handcock that has no citations, only your word. Your identification should remain but I would like to see a picture of Stratford-Handcock. I've thought about writing a Wikipedia article about Grabill. What do you think? 216.128.233.152 13:43, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Senor Cuete
- I edited the article. Check it out. 216.128.233.152 14:03, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Senor Cuete

Northwest Coast masks has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Pow-wows
[edit]Are you sure you want Category:Pow Wows in Category:Dances of the indigenous peoples of the Americas? While there it usually a lot of dancing at a pow wow, there are also a lot of other activities, and a typical pow wow is certainly not by any means exclusively a dance event. Many of the photos we have are not dance photos (though the majority are). - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- I agree that "Pow Wow" (with that capitalization) is wrong, except as part of the proper name of a particular event, but the category should still be plural. Also, you are making this move much harder than it needs to be. I think the new name should be Category:Powwows (or, probably better yet, Category:Pow wows, staying as close as possible to en-wiki), and we can get things there with a single bot command (well, two now that you've split this between two category names). - Jmabel ! Jmabel ! talk 04:45, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm, I see haven't been on in a few hours. I'm going to Category:Pow wows; if you think that's wrong we can discuss further, but let's keep them in one category. Again, this is all easily moved using bots if there's a need to move. - Jmabel ! talk 04:47, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Hi, sorry, I wasn't online while you were posting. Personally I greatly prefer powwow over pow wow; it's a commonly used single word. If categories need to be pluralized here, the Category:Powwows is fine. All powwows center around the dancing; the regalia is designed for dancing. Other events do happen (just like other things happen at a ball or a swing dance), but dancing is central. And we don't have categories (and probably shouldn't at this point) for the individual dances: jingle dress, grass dance, straight dress, fancy shawl, etc. I put it under "indigenous" instead of "Native American in the US" because powwows are so important in Canada. -Uyvsdi (talk) 20:05, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- I'm a little hesitant to go to a different name than on en-wiki, where the article is at en:Pow wow. Both of the particular ones that have categories use "Pow Wow" in their proper names. So are you sure this move is merited? If so, I'll do it. (I'm not normally on here this time of day, but my server is down at work.) - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- You mean "Pow wows," right? That's fine; it's a step up from "Pow-Wows" or "Pow Wows." If the word is broken into two parts, the "wow" definitely doesn't need to be capitalized. Thanks for fixing the redirect. Cheers, -Uyvsdi (talk) 20:13, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi
By the way, for the future: if you want to do a category move, and are pretty sure it isn't a controversial one, even if you are not an admin (indeed, if you don't have any tools access at all), you can still use User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. It might take a few days to be acted on (chronically backlogged), but it should work for anything uncontroversial. - Jmabel ! talk 01:50, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. It seems like many categories are incorrectly capitalized but am not sure how big of an issue that really is. I'll read up more on Commons MOS. Cheers, Uyvsdi (talk) 04:17, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi

Native American art
[edit]I agree with your removal of the category "Native American art" from appropriations of Native American art, but perhaps rather than a simple removal we need a new Category:Appropriations of Native American art? - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- There's already Category:Native Americans in art and it's many, many subcats. I didn't just rmv cats; I put images in more specific categories. -Uyvsdi (talk) 17:45, 21 May 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Aha! I did simply remove the Santa Rosa College logo. It that you are addressing? I have no idea why that was added to Category:Native American art. Was it designed by a Native American graphic artist? -Uyvsdi (talk) 18:04, 21 May 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- No, I was addressing two photos I took: File:Snoqualmie Moondance tent with runes.jpg and File:2000 Fremont Solstice Parade - raven.jpg. Note the dreamcatchers in the former; the latter is a rather skilled appropriation of Northwest Coast motifs. In the latter case, given the context of where I shot it, it wouldn't surprise me if the artist actually were a Northwest Coast Native. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- New Agers appropriations mixed up with Viking runes or someones costume for a New Age solstice parade should probably not be in a Native American art category. You wouldn't draw an ankh and a pyramid on your tent or dress up like King Tut and try to stick pics of it in "Ancient Egyptian Art" would you? Heironymous Rowe (talk) 06:57, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think you are misunderstanding me. For example, we have Category:Romanesque revival architecture including Category:Richardsonian Romanesque. No one is suggesting that Henry Hobson Richardson lived in the 12th century, only that his art was significantly influenced by surface aspects of the Romanesque. This is an analogous case. (Conversely, I would definitely say, as someone who lives in an area with a lot of Native Americans, that they are no less subject to New Ageiness than anyone else. Witness the prevalence of dreamcatchers as a motif in the art of Native Americans from regions with no historical connection to the Southwest Plains.) - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- Anyone who knows what en:Romanesque Revival architecture is would not assume its practitioners were from the the 12th century. A more apt analogy would be someone trying to put photos of post modern shopping mall architecture with concrete covered styrofoam arches and columns into the Category:Romanesque revival architecture. They may have some similar elements, and one may be partially derived from the other, but they are not the same thing. Heironymous Rowe (talk) 18:41, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Category:Richardsonian Romanesque is a notable art form; Category:Pueblo Revival Architecture could probably warrant a category if anyone cared to pursue that. The rune tent actually has no indication of being a dreamcatcher (which originated in Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota cultures of the Great Lakes; and today are found in every US truck stop west of the Mississippi); a circle with feathers could as likely be appropriation of a shield (see the Oklahoma state flag image). The Fremont solstice parade dancer appears to have a mask made from paper-maché and the cloth wings appear to be silk-screened or painted, but I can't categorize based on speculation. I did find an additional category for each image and have added them. There is no Category:Cultural appropriation category, so subcats seem premature (there is an Category:Appropriation under "Art" if you want to add that). Would a Native American cultural appropriation category serve a useful, educational purpose, or end up being POV, subjective/speculative, and offensive to both people who post the images and indigenous people? If this subject matter is interesting to you, I recommend checking out the Native Appropriations blog – well-written and interesting. Cheers, -Uyvsdi (talk) 18:46, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Your question (useful vs. offensive) is an interesting one and not easily answered. Cultural appropriation is certainly a notable topic and equally certainly a controversial one. And I think almost everyone would agree that appropriation can range from well-intentioned solidarity to utterly malign mocking, with any number of possible intentions and degrees of self-awareness in between. - Jmabel ! talk 23:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- Commons is such a mess, it seems a millions things need to be done first, but if you want to create a culture (mis)appropriations category, knock yourself out. Personally, I don't really find the subject matter too interesting, since the general public has such a tenuous grasp on indigenous art concepts, I'd much rather contribute images and organize images based on actually indigenous art. -Uyvsdi (talk) 02:40, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Uyvsdi
