First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

I noticed you've uploaded Image:P4S3.png and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used in more than one way. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing! Image deletion warning Image:9aneS3.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Mu-Cl.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello Smokefoot!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 11:15, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The quality of the chemical structure Image:Roxarsone.png is disputed

[edit]
Dispute notification The chemical structure Image:Roxarsone.png you uploaded has been tagged as and is now listed in Category:Low quality chemical diagrams. Images in this category might be deleted after one month if there is no upload of an improved version, if there is no objection from the uploader or other users and if a better version exists. Please discuss on the image talk page if you feel that the dispute is inappropriate. If you agree with the dispute, you can either upload an improved version or simply allow the image to be deleted.

In all cases, please do not take the dispute personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! --Leyo 16:00, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If the file is not being used in an article, you are free to delete.

I do not know how to delete and have also not been able to figure out how to add cat's to my other images. I would be glad to clean up the partial mess I have made (about 1/2 of my images are flawed). --Smokefoot (talk) 06:35, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For categorization, I suggest activating HotCat in the Preferences.
You can nominate images for deletion using the link Nominate for deletion in the Toolbox. Chemistry-related images are best nominated for deletion using this script that transcludes these deletion requests into Commons:WikiProject Chemistry/Deletion requests. --Leyo 09:58, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help. I will try to go back and nominate some of my images for deletion too. Really appreciate your assistance.--Smokefoot (talk) 06:26, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Smokefoot, your picture is used is some articles in the German Wikipedia. For Nickelocen and Metallocene I would like to use a detail of the picture (nickelocene crystals). Unfortunately the resolution of the picture is not high enough. Can you provide a picture with higher resolution where we can zoom to the Nickelocene crystals? Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) SVG files

[edit]

Hi, the .svg files you have uploaded seem not to be TRUE SVG files (at least those I've had a look at):

  • In reality, they are PNG raster images embedded into SVG shells.
No vector graphic exists: these files are then called fake SVG.
  • Rather than uploading such files as .svg, please upload those files as original .png files (those generated by your drawing tool).
  • Or better: generate TRUE .svg files with your drawing tool, and then do your upload !

Yours En rouge (talk) 18:56, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@En rouge: Oh that is a surprise and terrible news because I devoted so much effort. I will try to undo the harm. How could I have detected the fraud?--Smokefoot (talk) 20:16, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Smokefoot: Hi! I've detected this by two ways:
  • first, suspicion:
  • you open the .svg file in your web browser (in WP, not the File page, but really the .svg, by clicking in the image, or below on the link "original file")
  • you try to select characters or text in the displayed .svg picture
  • if you can do that => the file is native SVG (e.g. see File:Amminoacido lisina formula.svg, or File:Lizyna.svg)
  • if not, you must continue to the second step
  • second, confirmation:
  • open the .svg file in a text editor (or, if picture displayed in a web browser, do "open source code")
  • inspect/search for an <image> tag, or a text: href="data:image/png;base64,[.../...]"
  • if present (and the sole drawing tag in your .svg code) => the file is a fake SVG (e.g. see File:1,5-DAN.svg)
  • if not, you have probably several drawing tags in your .svg code (as <path>, <line>, ...) => the file is native SVG (e.g. see File:Cyclohexan-1,4-diamin.svg, in this file, the text can *not* be selected: the characters are not drawn as glyphs in a font, but as objects made out of paths; they cannot be selected out of a svg editor)
At your stage, on your computer, you can directly test the second way.
And, for your next uploads:
  • you must know if your drawing tool can export TRUE SVG files, and then upload them as is.
  • But, if not, you must generate and upload your files as PNG.
And, for the past uploads:
  • if you can generate TRUE SVG files, you upload a new .svg version for each file, a
  • if not, and you will be clean, you can add a {{FakeSVG}} template to each file description...
Yours, En rouge (talk) 22:10, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the detailed walk-through. My drawing program is ChemDraw is the most popular chemical structure drawing program. Knock-offs look awful. I also use other art programs. None produce .svg's. So I make .png's and then bought an "svg converter" which only does the fake svg's. I wonder if authentic converters exist.--Smokefoot (talk) 00:30, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PNG is fine, fully blessed by CHEM-MOS:) There are some "actual SVG" converters, but because they are not chem-centric they give results that are of variable quality. The closer-to-native way in ChemDraw is to save as some other vector format (PostScript or EPS?), which can be more reliably converted to SVG. If you have the ability to send ChemDraw feedback, tell them to support SVG (I thought they do on Windows but not on Mac?). Consider their web tool [1]. @En rouge: is there a commons gadget to extract the PNG and upload it as its own (png) file? DMacks (talk) 06:33, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
@Smokefoot:
  • Native file formats for ChemDraw (CDX and CDXML) seems to be tag based formats, implying drawing primitives and/or content description as objects. So, it seems very probable that a generation of a true SVG file is feasible, either directly in ChemDraw (natively or through a pluggin), or via an external tool (from CDX or CDXML files), or via an intermediate format then to be converted in SVG.
Such a process (3rd solution) is given in File:4-Thiouracil Structural Formula V.1b.svg, in Summary/Description section. I don't know if the result is a true or fake SVG.
=> instead of exporting in PNG then encapsuling it in a fake SVG with an external tool (your current process), what is suggested is to export in PDF then do PDF2SVG with an external tool (=> same complexity)
  • And if you've saved your molecules drawings in CDX or CDXML file, when the steps to generate true SVGs were established, you'll be able to overwrite the schematics (but, in my opinion, it's not necessary, as nothing is to be translated, nor modified ; SVG is only a plus for upscaling).
@DMacks:
Yours, En rouge (talk) 22:31, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I save my structural formulas in ChemDraw to the EPS format. Then, I convert them to SVG using Scribus. That's quite easy and quick. --Leyo 17:34, 12 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

FAKE SVG

[edit]

Hi Smokefoot, thank you for uploading all the chemical structures and equations. When I completed the file descriptions of some of your SVG drawings, I saw that there are also Fake SVG. Now they are collected into a maintenance categeory. It would be fine when you redraw them; that is not urgent – but it should be done. -- sarang사랑 14:33, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sarang: . Oh I did not know that there was a site. I uploaded a replacement for one of the fake svg's and was hoping to see the fake disappear from the list. So I welcome advice: if I upload a real svg, how do we remove the fakes?--Smokefoot (talk) 14:55, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that you redrew 6 files, thank you. The SVG description is performed by a script (which is still under development), I re_checked your 6 files. I will pass you the access to a working version of the script, that you can check your SVG fles by yourself. -- sarang사랑 17:00, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
When you want to try the script, just copy e.g. User:RicHard-59/commons.js into your User:Smokefoot/commons.js, then you should get new buttons/links for SVG files. I can coach you further how to use them. -- sarang사랑 06:45, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistent hydrogen visibility

[edit]

In File:WO2Cl2(dme).png the hydrogen atoms are included on the ethylene but not on the methyl groups. I have no idea which is preferable (or whether they're better as ball-and-stick rather than just stick), but I think all the C–H should be consistent with each other. If you have a moment, could you redraw it? DMacks (talk) 21:49, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You said here:-
Clarification please: The concern is with the copyright ownership? Presumably the country that issued the stamp, Iceland, holds copyright? Many postage stamps are used as figures in Wikipedia. Thanks for any help. --Smokefoot (talk) 00:05, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(I'll reply here as that discussion is archived and should not be edited further).
Yes, many stamps are copyrighted, and I'm not aware of anything excluding them from the default assumption that everything is assumed copyrighted and non-free unless shown otherwise. (e.g. by pointing to policy of issuing country or that they're out of copyright due to age).
Hunster said "Icelandic stamp less than 70 years old", I'd assume this implies it's not out of copyright.
Stamps can be uploaded to Commons *if* they're freely-usable, and then used at Wikipedia.
Other non-free stamp images might still be in use at English Wikipedia (and some others) if they meet the "fair use" criteria there. But in that case they have to be uploaded directly to Wikipedia and not Commons. Commons is for for freely-usable images only- even "fair use" images should not be uploaded to Commons and will be deleted.
Hope that clarifies things, and all the best. Ubcule (talk) 00:29, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
