Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works

- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.Yours sincerely, Christian Ferrer (talk) 13:45, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

File:Tupac Shakur art.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

File tagging File:Yandhi Cover Art (Free License).jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Yandhi Cover Art (Free License).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
[edit]Dear Premeditated,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Autopatrolled & Rollback rights given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. I've also granted your request for rollback rights here on Wikimedia Commons. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. - FitIndia Talk Mail 08:53, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Wikimedia SPACE telephone (proposal - big file).svg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Wikimedia SPACE telephone (proposal - big file).svg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Apple M1
[edit]Regarding the Apple M1
That image provided by Apple is not of an actual processor, so that text is all wrong. The creator of that graphics didn't know what they were doing, so they used copy/paste from previous imagery.
- The "APL1W85" is what the A13 Bionic is called, so we can't call it that.
- The "R9 07K 1820" says that its 4 GB LPDDR4X manufactured week 20 2018. It's probably the correct RAM type, but we are not sure. It could use LPDDR5 for all we know. But we know that it's more than 4 GB, and the date is at least 2 years off. We can't use that text. It's lifted from a A12.
- The "L1G1Y91486 1433". I don't know that the first part means, but the last says that the CPU part is manufactured week 33 2014, and that's just absurd :) We can't use that.
So.. this text is misleading, copy pasted from previous parts. I have no confidence that any of the text is correct in any meaningful way. Mine is at least not confusingly wrong.
I'm not even sure of the text layout. It can be one line on each vertex, or two lines at the top and bottom, or on the sides. Apple has done it all on previous parts. We don't know yet.
I will correct the writing when we get actual photographs of actual parts. Or.. in the case of what the part is named, when someone can do some deep diving into the actual OS on an actual machine.
And I use JPEG since the image is created mostly as a bitmap image. You wouldn't magically make it better if I saved it as SVG, not even the text as it's largely hand tuned in Photoshop. I instead make it more useable since there's larger support for JPEG than SVG. -- Henriok (talk) 12:42, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Henriok: Thanks for fast reply. Looks like you got a better understanding of this then me so, I guess we will have to wait for iFixit to open a Mac with the M1 chip. I believed the image was a vector. For Bitmaps JPEG should be fine :) -Premeditated (talk) 12:54, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
- I'd love to make it vector, but my skills doesn't allow for that yet. And I'm eagerly awaiting a teardown. Give me a ping if you find one and I haven't yet uploaded a new image. Sometimes I get distracted or just miss when they post :) -- Henriok (talk) 10:27, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- Message received! Thanks! Very nice picture. Not at all what I envisioned, and as you point out, extremely alike the A12X/Z. That will make my life easier, but not as exciting :P I'll get right to it, as soon as I get home from work. -- Henriok (talk) 12:39, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- Upon further investigation, the M1 isn't square, as the A12X (and my placeholder) was. It seems to confuse Wikipedia right now, as it keeps the square aspect ratio and therefore distorts the image of the M1. It probably will settle in time. -- Henriok (talk) 20:52, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
