uncategorized categories

[edit]

There are some categories you created or last edited on Commons:Report_UncategorizedCategories_with_infobox (174). Is there are plan for these? Some don't even have any files in them (17). Ideally, when creating a category one adds one or several parent categories.

Ideally, when creating
and then realizing that it should be
you would add {{Speedy}} to the first one.
The following are also empty:
[..]
Can I delete them?

Thank you, for pointing them out to me. I cleaned up my mess just a second ago. Have an enjoyable day ahead. Lotje (talk) 04:16, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Looking at the non-empty ones of yours at Commons:Report UncategorizedCategories with infobox, I guess most could be added to Category:People by name. Some seem to have Wikidata items that could be connected. If it helps, I can do you separate listing of those.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 12:09, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Enhancing999 I gues, for the time being that would be a good way to clean up. Didn't realize there where so many of them in that category. I'd love to see how you do it. Cheers. Lotje (talk) 12:46, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it's done.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 13:46, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I skipped the ones that didn't appear to be about people. Some 35 should be still left.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 14:33, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was trying to fix Category:Art 19, but wasn't sure. Would you add parent categories? Possibly a more explict category name would be helpful.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 08:02, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would you also a short description, preferably in English? The parent category itself doesn't really help in this case, plus none of the file descriptions I checked seem to include "Art 19".
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 17:07, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I added some categories to Art19. But I think the name should better be changed from 'Art19' to 'Universiteit van Vlaanderen podcasts', this is more clear. --PJ Geest (talk) 07:18, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the category Art19 is better removed if the category Universiteit van Vlaanderen podcasts exists. Since Art 19 is only a publisher of podcasts, not the creator, the category has no value. --PJ Geest (talk) 07:40, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it to Category:Podcasts hosted by ART19. We do have categories for the sources of files, as such I think it has some value. I would delete Category:Art 19. BTW, I also made Category:ART19.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 07:44, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, good! I see the category Podcasts hosted by ART19 is in the background, so then it is good for me! --PJ Geest (talk) 08:01, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Enhancing999: @PJ Geest: thank you for sorting this out Much appreciated. Lotje (talk) 11:32, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your welcome. In retrospect, I feel I was a bit slow in sorting this out.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 12:02, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at Category:The Trial of Mary Dugan and w:The Trial of Mary Dugan (play). The later doesn't mention what this is based on, so the 3 pdfs in the category may not relate to the same. Interestingly, they are about a "Mary Dugan". Not sure how to sort this out.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 12:02, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Enhancing999: are you reading my mind? I was actually looking into this (before I was interrupted by some private stuff here). Feel sure you are correct. Trying to find if there is a connection somehow and come back to you later, or do you know more about the subject Mary Dugan? Cheers. Lotje (talk) 12:43, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, plus the part of the pdf I read wasn't easy reading .. If there is a connection, one should bring it up on w:Talk:The Trial of Mary Dugan (play). If there was an actual trial, possibly the only connection was the name of the person (today the opposite would likely happen).

Signature of Natalia P. Mela

[edit]

I removed the category "Natalia Mela" from the file , because it shows the signature of the wife of Pavlos Melas, and grandmother of the sculptor Natalia Mela. Thanks. -- Flashdart2 (talk) 07:57, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very Muche Flashdart2 Lotje (talk) 10:41, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Brunel University RFC has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
