Help with barnstars

[edit]
Compressing large discussion

Hello there, Jerm! :)

I'm an admin at SqWiki and I look after barnstars and WikiLove in our project. I saw (and I believe I used) some of the barnstars you had made here in our WikiLove extension. Do you accept requests? I'm a Harry Potter fan and I've been wanting a (new) Harry Potter barnstar for ages but have found no one to ask to. There are also some other barnstars that are of low quality and could use a higher resolution. Can you help if I give you details? Just to be clear, we're always talking about Commons media, not localized versions. - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:42, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Klein Muçi: Hello, A Harry Potter barnstar has already been made via File:Harry Potter Barnstar Hires.png, and give me some links to these low-quality barnstars. I can help but I can't guarantee all of them will be remastered as the program I use is lacking in certain tools that only Adobe has. Jerm (talk) 12:11, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there! Glad you're still around. I saw your retired template just some days after I wrote this message. Yes, I will try and give you "a list of suggestions" soon enough. Maybe in a couple of hours. The said list may include some low-quality barnstars and maybe some ideas for new ones. Don't worry about "not being able to help enough". We're not in a hurry and certainly we should keep in mind that Rome wasn't built in a day and given the vast amount of human interests, the barnstar "absolute" list will hardly be over anytime soon. :) I just wanted to find people interested in creating barnstars in general. I used to co-work with Antonu (I don't know if you know him) but he retired and since then I haven't been able to find someone to help me (since I can't really help much with graphic design myself). While I give you the list, please, take a look here to understand more about my overall interest with the subject and here, to see the vast amount of barnstars we are currently using in the Albanian Wikipedia, all standardized in templates and usable by the WikiLove extension.
As for the Harry Potter one, I did see that one some days after I wrote here. I don't know if it'd be possible to have an alternative one stylized a bit differently. Not using the scar as a symbol (the scar, albeit a very strong symbol of HP, is not a symbol of good in the series :P - maybe we could put our attention in the glasses and the wand or something else?) and having a overall more "serious" style. The wizard's hat looks childish and cute. It's not bad in itself, since it does its job in representing the series and it is of a high quality. I was just thinking if we could have another version that dealt with the 2 details mentioned above.
Anyway, thank you for your response one more time! As I said, I'll be back in a few hours with a list. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 14:33, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The list

[edit]

These are barnstars that already exist and maybe could be of a better quality. Especially the biology one. Most of them are good like they are but the one dedicated to drinks and the one dedicated to sociology (society - but we used it for contributes in sociology) could be designed better so they're easier to understand what they're for and to able to better follow the standard of other barnstars. And the one dedicated to biology. :P

Then we have the BoNM-s. There are many countries that are lacking one. I don't have a list ready but if you're up to the work I can compile a list for you. I mean, it's easy: Find a list of the whole countries and remove the ones that we currently have. If you've seen the links above, we have them all alphabetically sorted.

Staying on the creation part, there are a lot of classical arts that have no corresponding barnstar like, poetry, dancing, acting, etc. Most of the classical sciences do have one but of course there are more barnstars that can be made even there. For example, in the past times we have needed to give users barnstars for merits in linguistics or pedagogy but those ones don't exist yet. Many fandoms could also benefit from this. Currently we have barnstars for Star Trek, The Simpsons, The Smurfs, and Harry Potter/Sherlock Holmes (the last ones aren't used yet in SqWiki). What about LOTR, Twilight, Lovecraft stories, classical pieces like Iliad, Faust, etc?

And lastly, if you've seen the links above, you may have seen we also have some foods as part of WikiLove. They are traditional food and drinks related to Albania. It would be good if we could have digital drawings of them following the same standard as barnstars instead of plain photographs but this is a "too local" request.

As I said in the beginning, the above list should serve more as a brainstorming device than an actual list. It starts from concrete needed things and continues on abstract ideas and suggestions. - Klein Muçi (talk) 23:54, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Klein Muçi: Understood, but concerning the barnstars listed above, the Barnstar Starfish was created using Adobe. As far as I know, only Adobe can layer an image on top of another image as a texture. I won't be able to improve it. The SiFi Barnstar is meant for science fiction topics, not actually science. That's why it looks cartoonish and is already high-quality. If your looking for an actual legit barnstar for biology, there is one here on commons but I forgot the name. It looks way better than any of my work. I can only describe it by memory but it won't be much of a description. It has an octopus covering the barnstar. I know, not much help, but I'll work on the Zoroastrianism, Society and Gear Barnstars. The mixed drink barnstar I already remastered. Also, the barnstar for "Medalje xhejnizmi" I personally opposed when it was introduced because it was too pixelated and the symbol is obscure/difficult to see. It was for covering topics for Jainism. I don't know if you're using it for that reason, but if so, I already made my version. Jerm (talk) 02:27, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I don't touch BoNM-s. Here's a list of available ones though. Jerm (talk) 03:18, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply! Regarding the biology one, I know what you mean because I've seen every barnstar (including BoNM) there is countless of times for creating the list we currently use and I'm sort of forced to check it periodically in hopes of new ones being added since neither me, nor our community can help much with creating barnstars themselves. Therefore don't be afraid to use descriptions like that in the future. I was thinking of using that for biology (or any of the other "versions" of barnstars that exist with a star and an animal on them) but I liked the idea of using a starfish as a barnstar and was hoping to get a standardized digital drawing focused on that concept or another more general concept/symbol for biology/life and not "too-specific" symbols with animals (starfish is an exception to this given the "pun" it creates with the barnstar concept). Those can be used in the future about different branches of biology like we've done for herpetology, ichthyology, zoology and botany. (Even though I must admit I'm not too happy with the images related to zoology and botany for the same reasons. Instead of a tiger, we could have maybe a silhouette of a 4 legs unidentified animal or another general concept/symbol related to the zoology and maybe we could have a less-detailed version of the flower, more schematic, as to say, for botany, so it represents flowers in general.) Generally speaking, if branches can be divided in subbranches (as does zoology) I'd like the symbol/concept to be "generic". To end it with an example, I really like your work on this one. As the author itself says on the image, "English: An unreadable signature logo for Wikiproject Anthroponymy.". It wouldn't be that good if the signature actually was a specific signature. It doesn't feel right to use a book image to represent the barnstar for The Divine Comedy, get what I mean?
As for the mixed drinks, I had seen what you did and really liked the end results but it had two problems with us:
  1. It was, true to his name, related to club cocktails (mixed drinks). We use that barnstar as a generic barnstar related to drinks in general "coupled" with this one for foods in general.
  2. It has the word "cocktails" written on it (which I really like as a fine touch on the design). All our barnstars are with no foreign words attached to them, even if the said words are international words. The only exception is this one but the word there is not so in focus as it is in the mixed drinks one. Having said that, the most problematic aspect for us, remains the first point rather than the second one.
And finally, related to Jainism, I saw what you did and we're using that for that specific reason but I rather liked the symbol being part of the center of the star rather than in front of it. It looks standardized with barnstars like this and this Also, given our total lack of information in Albania about religions like Jainism, Sikhism and Baháʼí Faith, the "hand symbol" looked easier to instinctively recognize as a religion symbol when compared to just an "obscure" (for us) character. If you could make one better following the model on the one you've created for Sikhism and Baháʼí Faith, I would go for it.
PS: We use the SiFi one exactly for that. Wasn't sure if it was Lo-Res ever since I included it. I've seen the list of BoNM but as far as I remember, it is lacking some countries, especially on Asia. Thank you for the help on those 3 ones! :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 12:10, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi: Because of work, I really haven't been online much. The only thing I've done is upload my first ribbons, no barnstars though. And I must decline a remake/alternative version of the Jainism Barnstar. I know you wanted it consistent with the other religious barnstars I made, but I already spent too much time on it. I've also attempted a Zoroastrianism Barnstar, it looked horrible so I have to drop out on that one. I haven't yet but I'm going to ask another editor to create a File:Faux Neon Cocktails Sign.svg without the writing so I can create a non-writing Mixed Drinks Barnstar. So basically, no progress yet, sorry. Jerm (talk) 22:00, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded the File:Cheesy Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 03:47, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, Jerm! :) Don't worry. Take your time and only work on things you enjoy doing. Thank you for notifying me of the new one related to cheese. I created a medal with it. :D :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:54, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi: See File:Mixed Drinks Barnstar Generic.png. Jerm (talk) 01:40, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I updated our medals on Wikipedia and Wikiquote accordingly. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:02, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi: Introducing File:Hymenoptera Barnstar.png. See Hymenoptera. Jerm (talk) 20:42, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Thank you for your notification! We currently have one medal for insects in general and we haven't sub-branched that yet so this is currently not needed (yet?) in our project. Maybe we could use one on beekeeping, maybe with a bee or a honeycomb or something on those lines. I thought of using this for that purpose first but then I saw that this was not a bee. :P Maybe my above words serve as an inspiration for you in the future. :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 01:38, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Klein Muçi: OK, I forgot that other language-Wikipedias don't have the same amount of articles as the English Wiki. Jerm (talk) 01:49, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi: I'm not sure if these will be useful to your Wiki: File:Dentistry Barnstar.png & File:Capitalist Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 17:51, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I also overhauled the design for File:Literary Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 16:10, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
+ File:Witchcraft Barnstar.png Jerm (talk) 03:22, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you a lot for notifying me! :D I'll see if I can add some of those on our wiki as medals. - Klein Muçi (talk) 14:26, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi: File:Cricket Barnstar.png Jerm (talk) 01:00, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! :)) I added it in SqWiki/SqQuote. - Klein Muçi (talk) 01:34, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Klein Muçi: File:Fisheries and Fishing Barnstar.png & File:Veganism and Vegetarianism Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 15:31, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! :D Added the vegan one on SqWiki/SqQuote. I might add the fishing one too later. - Klein Muçi (talk) 16:02, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi: I've been having visual issues with my eyes these past two weeks and it has gotten worse. I will be taking a break or decrease my time on the computer. I did make File:Table tennis Barnstar.png though, but it looks so blurry when I set it in the barnstar template. I'm not sure if the blurriness is because of the quality or my eyes. Jerm (talk) 03:17, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I'm really sorry to hear that man. :/ Of course, that's the right thing to do. Take care of yourself! :)) No, the barnstar is in perfect quality, don't worry. Thank you for telling me! I'll add it up in our projects. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 12:17, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Klein Muçi: Hello again. I doubt this will be any useful, but I made the File:Referee Barnstar.png. I made it for WikiProject Referees. Jerm (talk) 19:01, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Sorry for the late answer. I've been a bit busy these days and I couldn't find time to do wiki stuff. I'm back now. Thank you for that and your notice! I'm not sure if I'd be able to use that in a template in our wiki, as you said yourself. I was trying to reconceptualize it as something related to whistlers but I haven't been able to think of something yet so... On another subject, I hope you're feeling a bit better with your vision now. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 12:43, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi I'm doing a bit better. I didn't get off of my computer completely for a Wikibreak. I just cut off the usual time I spend on the computer, and of course, less time on the computer has helped alot. Jerm (talk) 15:23, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Klein Muçi See File:Blade Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 02:33, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately that is another case I'm not sure how to use in our community. :/ On a side request: Can you make the other mention of me in a separate discussion? This one is getting very long. - Klein Muçi (talk) 17:14, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstars

[edit]

@Klein Muçi: Hello again. Here is File:Color Barnstar.png for articles concerning color, and I know you have a mathematic barnstar already but here's my version: File:Mathematics Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 20:12, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Thank you! I got the one for colors. In math I kept the original one. What do you think if in the future we start focusing on some of the basic sciences like different disciplines of history, math, physics, etc? I got reminded by math. - Klein Muçi (talk) 19:57, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi I'm actual working on a Forensic science barnstar via File:Forensic Barnstar.png (not the final version), and another editor I was working with created the File:Elemental barnstar.png not so long ago for Chemical element, so I'm in the science area already. Jerm (talk) 23:25, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay. I was actually thinking about more basic, classical sciences but that's good too. Mention me when you finish working with that. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 00:42, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi The Forensic Barnstar is done. If you don't see any change, you'll have to clear your internet history/cache. Jerm (talk) 02:26, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I got it. Thank you! :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:04, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi File:Radioactive Barnstar Hires.png for articles related to radiation. Jerm (talk) 06:35, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Seen and used! :P I'm so glad I contacted you. You've saved me so much detective work! :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 09:55, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Klein Muçi File:Bivalvia Barnstar.png, see Bivalvia. Jerm (talk) 16:27, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Got it! Thanks! :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 17:35, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi File:Cue sports Barnstar.png, see Cue sports. Jerm (talk) 03:21, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Got it for both SqWiki and SqQuote. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 10:52, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Klein Muçi: Hello again, see File:Cryptocurrency Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 15:27, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Thank you! Cryptocurrency is one of those subjects which is a bit "far" from our current expansion of our community yet again. We don't even have a normalized name for it (apart from calling everything "Bitcoin") so I'm leaving it out this time, at least for the moment. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 10:59, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Klein Muçi Hello again, been awhile, hope you are doing well. I havn't been making barnstars as much because my Mac crashed in December. My mac was from 2010 and had a superb sceen like the new Macs today, so I was able to view and render high-quality graphics/images. I'm using a cheap 2017 Microsoft laptop now and it sucks both in the quality of the screen and rendering. Anyway, I made my first barnstar using this laptop. I had to look at the file with my iphone RX to to see if the quality was good. I think it's okay, the File:Firearms Barnstar.png. I'm going to make barnstars again but at a slow-pace. Jerm (talk) 02:53, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Heey! :) A week ago I was thinking about you. Wanted to ask how you are but didn't because I'm working on a pywikibot and didn't want to motivate you to work and then drag you for days in replies. Things have been a bit tough with COVID-19 restrictions and all but, anyway the wind blows... Sad to read that about your computer but at least you can take comfort in the fact that it was already old. As always, thank you for the mentioning! For the case in words, I have a small nitpick: We could benefit from having a barnstar for firearms but a modern pistol doesn't look, in my eyes, like the perfect symbol for that. It's too much correlated with the world of crime in the collective subconsciousness. Maybe using a classic/old/retro assault riffle or sniper could be better? I mean, I don't know how much open you are for the idea of changing it but just giving my two cents. On another subject, I reread the last conversation with you above and I think I'll add the one on cryptocurrency for SqWiki soon. - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:04, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi Glad to know you're safe. I'll try and make an alternative with a rifle. Jerm (talk) 04:15, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstars (Section 2)

[edit]

Klein Muçi Hello, I made File:Weather system Barnstar.png and the magic barnstar for illusional magic (not paranormal/witchcraft magic): File:Magic Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 04:14, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Sorry for the late reply. I changed my internet connection at home these days and it required some time for the new one to be set. Thank you! I kept the old version for meteorology but used the scenic magic one and the one related to cryptocurrency. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 10:11, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, thought there was something wrong. You usually respond fast but glad your back. In your absents, I've created additional barnstars: File:Circus Barnstar.png, File:Horticulture and Gardening Barnstar.png, File:Furry Barnstar.png, and File:Underwater diving Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 21:05, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow, that's a lot of those! I believe I'll soon get them all for SqWiki. Well, I believe all except for the furry one. Given that it is fairly a new term, we lack a name for it in our language so maybe that will be waiting for another time. - Klein Muçi (talk) 23:49, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi File:Webcomic Barnstar.png & File:Glass Barnstar.png. I've also updated the design of File:Plantae Barnstar.png. I also recommend replacing the space barnstar with File:Space Barnstar Hires.png. Jerm (talk) 18:42, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I didn't replace any (I replaced the space one temporarily but somehow the older version looked easier to identify as a space thing when in small size) but I used the glass one. I especially enjoyed that one because it is related to classical sciences/arts, which I've talked you about in the past. Pottery could be another subject to make a barnstar about in the future. Or maybe some other form of art like that? - Klein Muçi (talk) 09:27, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MPF I really like how the Glass Barnstar came out. I'll start working on a Pottery Barnstar as you said. There is also File:Heartgem Silver Barnstar.png. I didn't make this one, but it's really nice. You can use it for Gemology. Jerm (talk) 18:46, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I hadn't seen it. I'm already using one for geology. I could use this one for gemstones in particular but I'm not really convinced. The heart element looks a bit... Hmm... "Unrealistic" maybe? I'm not sure how to really put it in words. I'd prefer a different approach to something related to gems. My mind is only telling me the one with the rubin in the middle and the 2 tools on both sides of it (I think you have made that one, no?) but as I said, I've already used that. I'd want something like that in style but also different enough to be able to differentiate between the two. I'm not sure how clear I was. :P - Klein Muçi (talk) 22:19, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi File:Theatre Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 00:05, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Used it for both SqWiki and SqQuote. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 23:24, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstars (Section 3)

[edit]

Klein Muçi Hello Klein Muçi, just checking up on you. Your global contributions show you haven't been active, so that's why you're getting this message. Hope you are doing okay. Jerm (talk) 17:47, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, I'll be taking a long break from Commons to focus on article content. Here is a list of all the barnstars I've made since our last conversation:

Jerm (talk) 21:14, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, Jerm! :) I checked some weeks ago in this page because it had been a long time without talking and saw that you hadn't posted anything new and I didn't want to "force" you to work. Apparently you HAVE been working. A lot. hahaha I'll check and get some of those now. Thanks for your concerns! :) What you say it's true. The reason for that is somehow related to my WikiWork. Much of my work in Wikipedia is related to citations. I deal with their Lua modules, their maintenance categories and recently I did a create a Pywikibot to help in fixing some of their errors. Now the bot works fine but its database needs to be updated periodically. I tried writing a script to make the update automatic but somehow, something happens in regard to the Wikimedia's servers and it doesn't work as intended. I literally tried everything I could to fix it, working around 8 hours a day for some periods and asking everyone I could for help but still the problem persists. You can check here one of the longest conversations I've been having in regard to it in MediaWiki. All this, not only burned me out but started affecting some other users I was asking for help as well and so, after having tried everything, I took a break, a bit with a bitter taste from the whole thing. Anyway, I'll check them and get to work with adapting them for the Albanian communities. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 08:34, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi Glad to know you're still around. Technical work can be a hassle. Futhermore, I'll probably just take a break from Wikipedia altogether. Happy editing & cheers! :) Jerm (talk) 20:09, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've seen that you've wanted to do that many times in the past. Hope you have a good time. When you come back, if you do, let me know, no matter how much time has passed. :)) Have a good time! :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 08:30, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Klein Muçi It seems I can't break away from Wikipedia, no matter how much I want to, so I made this: File:Romance Barnstar.png. Jerm (talk) 23:27, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there! Welcome back! :))
For the moment I can't think of a specific medal to create with that but if anything love related comes to mind, I'll get it. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 13:46, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Klein Muçi, sorry, but I completely for got about this discussion after I collapsed it entirely. I hope you are doing well and are safe. I did make a few more barnstars that might be useful to you:

Jerm (talk) 22:51, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there Jerm! I'm grateful you keep notifying me about these new works you upload. And always good to see you back. I hope you've had a good time with this wikibreak. I used 2 of them. :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:18, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do you make your Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum images clear?

[edit]

I've been struggling to make the lines appear clearer, and the sharpening tool doesn't solve the case. May I know what editing program do you use and the tools as well? Jehoiakimin (talk) 12:06, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Heart anterior exterior view.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
