English: This photo demonstrates the ability of cellulose nanocrystal thin films to rotate plane polarised light. The film is between crossed polars and the colours produced arise from the orientation of the crystals to the wave plate. Blue is observed when the slow optical axis of the crystals is aligned parallel to the slow axis of the wave plate. Yellow is seen when the slow optical axis of the crystals is aligned perpendicular to the slow axis of the wave plate. Here crystal growth has propagated from the edge of the container (from the bottom of the picture) equally for both alignments to produce these columns. The film was made by evaporating the aqueous content from a cellulose nanocrystal suspension and the image was taken using a polarised optical microscope fitted with a full retardation waveplate. This work was done in my lab at the University of Exeter. |
