SVG problem

Hi. I uploaded this picture Image:Cavalier perspective 45.svg (SVG version) based on this one Image:Kavalierperspektive.PNG (PNG version). I've made it on Illustrator and saved in SVG 1.1 with "output with fewer <tspan> elements". But something is wrong. The image is invisible, but if you click on it, its ok, see here [1]. Can someone tell me why? Mosca2 21:43, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I got the same problem. Would be nice to know what options should one use when saving svg:s in Illustrator. I got frustrated trying and just downloaded Inkscape. I create the images in Illustrator & save in svg format, and then open and save them again in Inkscape. Works, but still I would like to know the answer and get rid of Inkscape. Jenson 11:26, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is bugzilla:2888 (see also Commons:Bugs) and the fact that Adobe Illustrator is putting lots of "junk" in your SVGs. You should try and strip out this junk before uploading SVGs (you can do it in a text editor) and then hopefully they will be fine. You can fix it by hand. I fixed Image:Cavalier perspective 45.svg. If you get the problem again report it again and we'll see what happens then. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reply and for correcting the image. Concerning Illustrator putting "junk", may be we should select other options on save dialog. If I find the correct solution on Illustrator I will tell. It seems most of the times, SVG images on Illustrator are smaller than Inskape, don't no why, but Illustrator got a lot of options on saving SVG files (14 options), Inkskape seems got no option. Mosca2 21:27, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inkscape has two saving formats, "plain SVG" and "Inkscape SVG". I think Inkscape SVG stores information that Inkscape uses that isn't required for the SVG specification. Haven't tried uploading a "plain" SVG - it might be smaller.
Regarding the image problems, see also Bug 5463. —Scott5114 20:30, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add a licence tag to an already uploaded image...?

Venturi effects diagram image:Venturifixed2.PNG

Hi, i accidentally uploaded three times a wrong version of a venturi effects diagram i made under the name of image:venturi5.svg, Image:Venturi6.svg, Image:Venturifixed.PNG is there any way that those graphics can be replaced/deleted? to this one Image:Venturifixed2.PNG? --HappyApple 04:37, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think, best solution is to try to fix SVG file and leave only SVG. If you'll not able yourself too, try to ask help at Commons talk:WikiProject Flags. Leaving PNG is last option.
If your account is more the 4 days old, you could replace existing image with new version.

Creating a New Category.

I have been browsing your site and have found a location that does not seem to have been covered previously and I was adding a few pictures but am unaware as to how I might create a category that users may search for. Any help would be appreciated, I apolegize if this is covered somewhere else, I am a rather new user to this site and with the breadth of this site it seems like I could have easily missed this information.

edit: The location in question is Mt. Wakakusa (Mikasayama) in Nara Prefecture, Japan.

Emerson 01:46, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Starting at Category:Japan, we have Category:Japanese prefectures > Category:Nara prefecture. We also have Category:Geography of Japan > Category:Mountains of Japan but there is no further Category:Mt. Wakakusa (or if there is a better name, use it - I would use whatever the Wikipedia article is called). So you can create it. When you upload a photo (or if you already have, click on "edit" at the image page), simply type in
:Category:Mt. Wakakusa

Then at the bottom of the image page will be a red link to "Mt. Wakakusa". Follow that red image link. You can write a short description if you want - something similar to Category:Mt. Nantai - but the most important thing is to give it parent categories:

+ anything else that might be relevant. Try it out and see how you go. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:38, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Replace: Cylindrical Capacitor2.svg -> Cylindrical_Capacitor.svg

Hi, may I ask for replacement of Image:Cylindrical_Capacitor.svg by an improved version named Image:Cylindrical Capacitor2.svg ? Best regards --Fabian R 09:11, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not just yet... there's an ugly black box in the 2nd one!
Also, please note if an image is public domain then it can't be released under any license. PD means there is no (or you give up all) claims to copyright. And also please give your images a category, or put them on a gallery page. pfctdayelise (translate?) 09:21, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, i didn't express myself clearly. The one with the ugly box should vanish. The resulting should have the name "Cylindrical Capacitor.svg" and should have the content of Image:Cylindrical_Capacitor2.svg. I will fix up the category --Fabian R 10:27, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the copyrights - are there any recommodations? Best regards --Fabian R 10:16, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, could you remove Image:Zylinder1.svg it is unintentionally left blank? --Fabian R 10:25, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, it is quite obvious now. I think I was sleepy when I looked before, sorry. :) All fixed.
Well, the copyright situation is not quite clear to me. Why is it PD-Germany? I don't see any reason Germany should apply to it. Is it because you are the author and you release all rights? In that case, put PD-self. Also for source you can put "self-made" or describe how you made it, e.g. what program. Also if you used anything to base your work off (but this is so simple, probably not). pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:31, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

image not working in regular view

This image Image:World War 2.gif does not work in regular view or as a thumbnail, however the high resolution still works. Is there any way to fix this? I had thought there would be problems with such a large filesize animated gif (1.7mb), I wouldnt normally make them that large but because I was asked to make a month by month version of a previous image. Astrokey44 11:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. It is quite likely a problem with our image rendering. The only thing I could find was bugzilla:3083. Maybe we will find out soon if that's the problem or not. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:34, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There's a memory limit on image rendering - scaling a large animated gif probably takes to much RAM. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:09, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
ok, thanks for your help Astrokey44 01:32, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit an image manually?

Hello, I would like to fix the distortion and colour bias in an image. I suppose Edit this file using an external application is the way to go, but I can't get the helper application to work (I keep getting "libgobject-2.0-0.dll not found").
So what would be the best way to do this manually?--Wikipeder 10:23, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need to download the image separately (click on the file name just below where the file appears in its image page), and open it in an image editing software program. There is some information about open source image editing programs at Commons:Software. What you use might depend on what image format you are working with.
After you've edited the image, you can upload the new version directly over the old. There's a link to do this on the image page. Your account has to be > 4 days old. pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:37, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

license

I added http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:European_court_of_justice.jpg I wrote the license (CC-by-nc-nd 2.0) in the description, because it wasn't in the drop-down menu. Now it lacks a copyright tag, of course. Could someone add it/tell me how to add it? --Myukew 16:51, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You would add a license tag using the template syntax: Cc-by; you can do that by editing the page, or imediately during upload in the description field.
However, commons does not allow material under ND or NC licenses. I'll delete the file. Please read Commons:Licensing carefully before uploading more images. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:02, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agathis robusta

I am too new to do this. I wanted to replace the file Image:Agathisrobusta.JPG (which has bad photoshop edits) with the file Image:Arobusta.jpg. I uploaded both of these. The first name is the better one tho. Old file is Image:Agathisrobusta.JPG. New file is Image:Arobusta.jpg Cheers Kahuroa 00:35, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, the thing is, they're in no way the same file. Why not just keep both versions? pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:03, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I explained this at the beginning of this post. I know they are not the same file - it wouldn't let me replace the old one so I had to upload it separately. I'd like the first one deleted because it has bad photoshop edits. Thanks again Kahuroa 04:55, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SVG problem

doesnt rasterize
File:Delet.svg
ok

Same problem as reported above. im using illustrator cs2, after i updated my rail map the image failed to rasterize on the filepage, but the svg open fine.

I thought id upload the same file to another test page and was surprised to find that it rasterizes ok. there cant be anything wrong with the file as its the exact same one on both pages, but the one on the left doesnt work while the one on the right works fine. solutions anyone? --PlaneMad 07:56, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Both look fine for me. Try clearing your browser cache. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The thumbnails here are okay but got to the filepage. cleared my cache, tried in both opera and ie, no luck. But if you click on the blamk image, you can view the full size svg. --PlaneMad 12:34, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed it. It's just the thumbnail doesn't render properly. Seems to be bugzilla:2888, or at least caused for the same reason as that bug. You can force it to re-render by doing this:
 • Click "edit" on the image page
 • In the URL bar, change "action=edit" to "action=purge"
 • Hit Ctrl+Refresh to force new rendering of thumbnail
 • Repeat if necessary
--pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:28, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really clear to me how to force a re-rendering of other thumbnail sizes, though (like the one on this page). Although I note it is fine in the category view. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:31, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And the bug strikes again Image:India map en.svg. The above procedure does not seem to work. The full size svg opens up fine. The thumbnail was fine for some time but then mysteriously stopped working, pls help -- 17:27, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
I guess you were talking about the category-size thumbnail. I got it back (by following the above procedure: note REPEAT if neccesary). pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:42, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

english

how do i set my defaut to english the page i'm trying to view is in german

Which page is it? Are you logged into an account or not?
One way to force the page to show English (which it should by default, anyway) is to hit "edit" and then in the URL, change the end of it "action=edit" to "uselang=en". pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:30, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with duplicate image

I intended to replace the older version of this file [2] with a new, higher-resolution version. But now both copies of the image are present, and when I click "delete" for the older, lower-resolution copy, it tells me I need administrator priveleges to do that. Can an administrator please delete the older copy?

One other problem... the description on the newer image is slightly different than the description on the original, but the new image is being displayed with the description from the old one. Can this be fixed? Thanks -- moondigger 23:27, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update: The same thing is happening with each file I upload. I am replacing all five of my original images with higher-resolution versions. Is this the expected behavior? -- moondigger 23:33, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem on the software side. Old image versions are kept for reference and usually only deleted if vandalized. You have to edit the image description page itself to change it, reuploading the image with a new text does not help because this text will not be displayed. Just go to your image and click EDIT on top left of the image to alter the description. --Denniss 01:12, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you really feel it necessary to have the old versions deleted, let me know. We would usually only do this if there is some problem such as privacy or inaccuracy though. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:40, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it isn't necessary, though I see no reason to keep the older versions around. They are near-duplicates except for size (the new ones are higher resolution). I just assumed that when you replace an image, it is actually replaced. -- moondigger 14:58, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Filename guidelines

Are there available guidelines for naming uploaded files, or do we just wing it? =) Powers 23:53, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Dbenbenn provides some tips on his userpage. There are official instructions on file descriptions, but apparently not for filenames. However, the rule of thumb is to keep it short, sweet, but nevertheless expressive. Keep numbers, dates, years, and such out of the filename, as they are seldom useful, except for special cases, like flags and maps, which make sense better with years. Strive to name the subject unambiguously in as few words as possible :) —UED77 00:09, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Be descriptive enough to avoid a nameclash (don't call your photo Sunset.jpg or Flower.jpg). I personally don't object to dates in the filename, it's reasonably common. You can use whatever language you like - English is not necessary. Some people feel a latin script should be used (ie not CJK/Arabic etc characters), but I disagree (officially, you can use whatever you want). But it should make sense whatever language you choose. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:28, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do articles that use the image show up in the what links here section?Oldwildbill 12:30, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a software feature. To make a page be listed there, you have to insert the image into that page, like this:

Is that what you want to do? pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I used the picture in an article info box. When I checked the picture and click on what links here - it said no article linking to the picture? I was just wondering how to make it happen. For example I used a map of maryland as a thumb in the article - wikipedia:1st Maryland Regiment. When I look at the map - it states no article link to it.--Oldwildbill 12:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, right. It's a technical limitation that "file links" only works for the same wiki, i.e. Commons articles. You can see where the image is being used over all wikis by clicking the "check usage" tab at the top of the image page. Oh but wait... it doesn't show English wikipedia usage due to a problem with that database. (Should be fixed soon.) So actually it won't give you much joy at the moment. :) You can see where the image is being used in English wikipedia by clicking the "en" tab at the top of the image page, then scrolling down to the "what links here" on that "fake" image page. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:04, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Thought I was doing something wrong.--Oldwildbill 13:19, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

question

KimMart83.71.2.192 11:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC) Can you use images from the Commons to use in writing/ preparing articles for Wikipedia? Is it best to save to a computer and then insert into article page? Thanks[reply]

Yes. Any image at Commons can be automatically used at Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project, as if it was already hosted there. So to insert Image:Example.jpg into an article at Wikipedia, just type something like

and it will automatically pick up the image from commons without you doing anything.
The only exception is if there is a photo already uploaded at Wikipedia with the same name -- then it will use the Wikipedia photo always, and you won't be able to use the Commons image. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:37, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

question

Why I couldn't send no images? ;/ Leinad 21:33, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't understand the question. What do you want to do? Special:Upload an image? pfctdayelise (translate?) 22:32, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons is not an image hosting service, isn't it?

I think that it should be stated that images hosted on wikimedia commons shouldn't be used to be linked from other websites (no wikimedia related) without a link to the wikimedia commons page.. I asume?

Have you noticed our images being used on another website? Where?
Of course they are free to use (that's rather the point), but (A) they shouldn't hotlink and (B) in most cases they should recognise the source (us). pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:09, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

regular image not displaying

I uploaded a new version of Image:World 1898 empires colonies territory.png but the regular image isnt working. The same thing happened with several other images i loaded today (such as this). The high resolution works and also the thumbnail on wikipedia works, so it isnt a major problem, but still it looks like the image isnt there. Is this something temporary or should I try to load it again later? Thanks --Astrokey44 10:08, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it. Rendering seems to have had some problems today and yesterday. You can force the software to redraw a thumbnail by:
 • clicking the "edit" button on the image page
 • changing the URL from "action=edit" to "action=purge"
 • hitting Ctrl+Refresh until the thumbnail renders correctly... usually repeatedly. took me about 6 goes for these ones.
I can't figure out exactly how to make it redraw other-size thumbnails, though. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:03, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that worked, but there now seems to be some trouble with displaying the thumbnail images in the wikipedia articles - such as w:FIFA World Cup hosts the image is not displaying. This is only with these new images that were loaded or updated in the past day or so --Astrokey44 23:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can't create account to upload image

Panic over! I've now managed to create account. The problem below was resolved by turning off spyblocker which prevented security image being displayed. (For what reason, i do not know.) Hope this helps some one else.

Hi, Can you help me, Ive been trying to login using my wiki username and password to commons so i can upload an image. That didn't work so i tried to create an account particular to Commons. The form says... As a protection against automated spam, you'll need to type in the words that appear in this image to register an account: ... There is no image displayed saying anything. The image address is http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Captcha/image&wpCaptchaId=1465599669 file type unknown. I tried to just enter a username and password, but that failed to create an account.

Can you please advise me where i am going wrong? Thankyou

Another SVG rendering problem

The image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:I-5.svg is having rendering problems on both its own page and almost every referenced page (for example the I-5 thumbnail on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_8).

I read bugzilla:2888 so I can understand what's going on however I can't figure out how to fix it completely. I did the edit=purge trick and that seemed to have fixed the Interstate 5 article image however the I-5.svg page and smaller thumbnails are still broken. I ran the CheckUsage tool on it and for en.wikipedia.org it reports "The database copy for this wiki is marked as broken, please check manually!" How can I check it manually or can an editor only do that? Fourpointsix 18:10, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I usually just klick on the text en.wikipedia.org to the left of The database copy for this wiki is marked as broken... this brings you to the info page on en.wikipedia, from there you can see the usage on english wikipedia /Lokal Profil 23:36, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but maybe I clouded things. The core problem is the I-5.svg file has broken thumbnails all over the place. What's the best way to fix this? Fourpointsix 02:08, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is actually probably NOT bugzilla:2888 but just the fact that the last few days, the software has done a really bad job at producing thumbnails. People have posted about it on the Village pump. The dev's are looking into it so I think all we can do is sit tight and wait. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:28, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Any ideas? Cheers.--Trounce 10:22, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thumbnailing of PNGs is limited to about 12 Megapixels - thumbnailing larger PNGs uses too much RAM. If you use a larger PNG, it will be served to your browser "as is" - the browser then downloads the entire image (which may take quite long) and does the scaling, which may fail for large images, or bog down your box.

A workaround is to upload the full scal image first, then replace it by a scaled down version smaller than 12 megapixels. That way, the full scale version is available in the history, but thumbnailing still works. But it would be preferrable to use SVG for this type of image anyway. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The new account signup page doen't load at all for me, neither in Internet Explorer 7 nor Firefox 1.5? I just created an account on Wikipedia, and would like an account here to upload my photos. I am having an identical problem at other Wiki sites such as Wiktionary, Wikinews, etc.

This is a fact of Wikimedia, at the moment you have to create a separate account for each different wiki you want to use. Hopefully we will one day migrate to the "universal login". pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:18, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio?

This image from a postcard was tagged for lack of info. Image:St. Josephine's Day Celebrations - El Ferrol.JPG. The uploader now claims it as his own work. Yet here [3] the uploader admits that he is using commercial postcards which are about 40 years old. Any advice? Images are used in [4] and I suppose on other language wikipedias. Hm. I checked the rest of his images and they're all the same. I tagged them all as no source. If you are a user at mi.wp I would remove the images with the expectation that they will be deleted. Thanks for alerting us. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:41, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moving image for new account

Hi, could anyone move Image:Logisticpdfunction-new.png to Image:Logisticpdfunction.png, keeping the file history of the latter if possible?

There was a typo in the gnuplot script resulting in the first image, and I fixed it and generated the second. Mathematically-inclined editors should be able to easily verify that the change is appropriate.

Thanks in advance!

Done (I cropped out some whitespace around the edges too). pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:31, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move file Brazil Niteroimap bwneg new.png to Brazil Niteroimap bwneg.png

I uploaded the file Brazil Niteroimap bwneg.png, but it was too big. I made a smaller version and uploaded as Brazil Niteroimap bwneg new.png.
Could you move the file Brazil Niteroimap bwneg new.png to Brazil Niteroimap bwneg.png, so I can use it in a template?
Thanks, Nelson.

Please remove wrong picture

Please remove this wrong picture Image:TabelloneGiostraSaracino.JPG, which I replaced with the correct version Image:CartelloneGiostraSaracino.JPG. Paolomenchetti

You wanted it to be deleted? Because that's what I did. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:42, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Switch images

Can somebody switch Image:Bahia Micro FeiradeSantana.svg and Image:Bahia Micro Jeremoabo.svg. The file labeled Feira de Santana actually contains the map Jeremoabo and vice versa. Thank you. WHB 21:27, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Done. You could've easily done this yourself by the way; just upload a new version; that overwrites the old one. NielsF 21:39, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Accounts that are too new (<4 days old) cannot overwrite files. This is to provide some barrier against image replacement vandals. Users receive a notice that tells them to request the overwriting here. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:14, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know, that's why I looked into WHB's editing history: first edit in January 2005... NielsF 01:20, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh :) carry on, then... pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:21, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Replace Image

The commons image Image:Flag_of_Senegal.svg has the wrong colors for the flag of Senegal. The true colors can be seen at:

http://www.primature.sn/senegal/symbolique.html http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/flags/sg-flag.html

I have uploaded a new image that more closely resembles the true colors of the flag of Senegal at Image:Flag_of_Senegal2.svg. It would be appreciated if you could please replace Image:Flag_of_Senegal.svg with Image:Flag_of_Senegal2.svg. Spikey 11:23, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The original colours look much more faithful to those links than your new file. Please discuss this change on the talk page first. Flag colours are naturally controversial and it is far better to thrash out the details in a discussion than have a revert war over colour preferences. Thankyou, pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:36, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I have uploaded a new file that is more true to the actual colors. Image:Flag_of_Senegal3.svg. Could you please delete Image:Flag_of_Senegal2.svg, the colors are indeed off.Spikey 11:45, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
