Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:John Vanbiesbrouck.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:46, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Flickr review
editImages that come from Flickr should be tagged with Flickrreview so that license reviewers can double-check the license. This independent checking helps us ensure that images that originally came from Flickr (e.g., File:Johnny Oduya 2010.jpg), were freely licensed when they were uploaded, even if the Flickr account holder has since changed their licensing to something more restrictive. Thanks.--Chaser (talk) 02:44, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
BTW, if the license is version 2.0, tag it as such, like , rather than just CC-BY. Thanks.--Chaser (talk) 02:47, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- Okay. I'll do that from now on. Thanks for the heads up.--Leech44 (talk) 02:49, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'll probably have quite a few over the next few days. A user has a lot of available pics of individuals who need new images. You've been warned ;)--Leech44 (talk) 02:57, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- That's OK. As I say, this helps resolve doubts in the long run.--Chaser (talk) 02:58, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'm sure it does. I wish I had know to do that earlier. Thanks again for the advice.--Leech44 (talk) 03:03, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Your Flickr uploads
editHello Leech44!
Thanks a lot for your contributions! Thank you for transferring images from Flickr to Commons! Two hints ahead:
- Always upload the highest resolution of a photograph that is available on flickr
- You can use this tool for your flickr uploads. It makes the hole procedure much easier and faster for you!
Thank you for your support! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 09:02, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Fair Use Question at Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Steve_Montador.jpg
editPerhaps more than you wanted to know:
Although the law varies from country to country, generally "Fair Use" is very specific to the particular context. For example, you could probably include a small photo of famous actor John Doe in an article on him on WP:EN if there were no freely licensed images available. You probably could not include the same photo in an article on Famous Actors of the 20th Century, because the subject is so broad that a picture of John Doe would not be missed.
You will note that images that are used under Fair Use on WP:EN have a rationale specific to each place they are used -- thus there are five different rationales for the different uses there of Picasso's Guernica, albeit similar in many respects.
This requirement for specificity makes it impossible to construct a fair use rational for an image on Commons -- because Commons is a repository, we cannot know where an image will be used and all of our media must be usable anywhere, except for personality rights and trademark restrictions. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:27, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
- Not that it matters now but I guess Fair Use wasn't really what I meant. I was more or less curious if we could build a special case template were it would say that the photographer holds the copyright but has authorized Wikipedia to display the image. This way we would be able to continue to use the images since Bridgett was willing to allow their usage but it was concerns over unauthorized resale that was the issue. I was hoping to have some kind of copyright notification while still allowing the general use of the images. As stipulated by the "replace this image" templates sometimes used in info boxes states: "NOTE TO EDITORS: Do not introduce any fair use images in the infobox. Any fair use photos (i.e. promotional photos) are copyright violations and will be deleted". Therefore the images would not have passed a fair use rationale. While if we had a template with a link to the discussion which included Bridgett's comments and accompanied by a list of the photos allowed to have the special template we could continue to use these high quality pics. But it was just an idea to try to play both sides of the fence, keeping the copyright in tacked and still having the freedom to use these images universally throughout WP.--Leech44 (talk) 01:16, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- Aha -- I understand. That's a good idea, but even WP requires that images be free for reuse, within the limits of a possible fair use rationale. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:00, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover!
edit
Hi Leech44, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Thanks for uploading File:Daniel Paille.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Important message for file movers
editA community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
