WASHINGTON, DC – Earlier today, Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who serve as Chairman and Ranking Member of the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee, sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook inquiring about the company’s App Store Guidelines and sharing concerns about how the tech giant
Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an organization that is within, but is independent of the Internal Revenue Service.
In March of 2021, Congressman Bilirakis was named the 12th Most Effective Republican Legislator in Congress based upon his record of legislative achievements. He was also named as one of the most Bipartisan Members of Congress. The following reflect his legislative accomplishments this term:
5 Bilirakis Bills Signed Into Law Since January of 2021
Big Tech is falling short when it comes to protecting Americans, especially children. The Communications Decency Act was meant to protect our society, specifically our kids. However, Big Tech has been picking and choosing which parts of the law to follow, which is dangerous and inappropriate.

In my district in Florida and across the country, Many of us in Congress continue to hear from our constituents about Americans continue to feel the pressure of rising health care costsprescription drug costs. Too often, bad actors in the marketplace take advantage of monopolies, skyrocketing the price of lifesaving medication simply because there is little to no competition.
Looking back on 2016, a turbulent year for sure in politics, we often saw the biggest rivalries and the loudest pundits take center stage. All along, my main focus was always working hard on behalf of Florida's 12th District. We accomplished some important legislative wins for our communities, with 16 initiatives I wrote being signed into law this year.
We need to give people fighting rare diseases a voice. That is why I introduced a provision to 21st Century Cures called the OPEN Act, an initiative to help leverage the free market and promote repurposing major market drugs for rare diseases. The OPEN Act has the potential to result in hundreds of new drugs and treatments for individuals with rare diseases, as well as a new surge in biotechnology jobs and investments.
Each time I have the privilege of meeting the heroes who wore our nation’s uniform, I am reminded they represent the very best of America. From World War II and Korea to Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan, we would not be the nation we are today without those who served.
This summer, during Congress' major district work period, I had the opportunity to meet with many of my constituents to hear their thoughts and ideas on the issues they care most about. While I come home every weekend, the August work period offers an extended period of time for me to truly connect with the residents of Florida's Twelfth Congressional District.
America is the land of opportunity. Yet after decades of programs in which trillions of dollars have been spent, some people are still stuck in the cycle of poverty. In order to fix the problem, we need to think differently. I am working to help Americans pursue the careers they want and contribute to our thriving nation. I am working to help people get back on their feet.
It's no wonder Americans pay tens of millions of dollars a year for tax preparers to wade through 70,000 pages worth of tax law. The tax code is confusing, and sends too much money to Washington and too many jobs overseas.
Many of my constituents, local businesses, and organizations are struggling in today's economy. Although our state brings in many tourists and our local businesses continue working hard to help our communities thrive, our government is not encouraging and embracing growth as best it could.
Many local patients and families have discussed their health care struggles with me. Too many individuals, families, and businesses in our state are facing high premiums and deductible costs under the administration’s health care law. (Just this week we’ve learned Aetna will no longer be insuring Floridians further confounding folks who need health coverage).
Now more than ever before, we need to work together to ensure the safety, security and long term success of our nation. I am proud to join my colleagues in the House in an effort to prioritize the things that truly matter.
This summer has been filled with important legislative landmarks, major hearings and votes, meetings with constituents, events in Florida's twelfth district and our nation's Capitol, and personal family milestones. Here are some of the highlights from the month:
Florida has some of the most dangerous roads in the country. Many lives have been lost due to car accidents, and we all have horror stories trying to navigate the hazards of a daily commute. But, did you know, there have been more deaths related to drug abuse than car accidents in the U.S.?
Last week, I held my 10th Annual Veterans' Fair to help support local Veterans and gather their ideas on issues important to them.
Women's History Month allows us time to reflect on the many important women who have had a lasting impact on our past. This month also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the women making history today for tomorrow's generation of innovators, newsmakers, and community leaders.
Rare Disease Week gave us the opportunity to raise awareness and encourage research to find cures and treatments for rare diseases. Rare diseases are not so rare in our nation.
Some RARE facts:
Ashleigh Pike is an inspiration to many in our community and across the nation. Her story touches patients, families, advocates, and health care professionals alike.
Ashleigh is one of the main driving forces behind important legislation passed by the House last year, my OPEN Act.
This week, I met with several patients and more than 140 advocates, representing more than 10 organizations, during the annual Congenital Heart Legislative Conference. These leaders are working to improve and prolong the lives of those living with a congenital heart defect (CHD).
In our home state of Florida, water is a pretty big deal. We all know about the many benefits our bodies of waters provide to our communities. What you may not know, is that Congress recently took a stand to protect our waters.
As your elected official, my job is to help YOU. This year, my staff and I worked diligently to assist the residents of Florida's 12th district in a variety of ways.
Helping people is why I came to Congress. It is the motivation behind everything I do. This year, I am honored to have been a part of many legislative initiatives that will truly help my constituents and families across the nation.
Yesterday, I had the honor of meeting with Connie Pilallis, the Grand President, and Elena Saviolakis, the Executive Director of the Daughters of Penelope in my Washington, DC office.
November was a wonderful month, reminding us to be grateful for the many privileges we have. It is truly an honor to serve Florida's twelfth district. My many meetings with constituents, local businesses, Veterans, advocates, and families served as a reminder of how lucky I am. Here are some highlights from November:
I am proud to be a part of the Florida delegation, representing the great Sunshine State and its residents. Florida knows how to do travel and tourism right!
Our state is one of America's top destinations for tourists. I am so proud that we have been successful in creating an environment where tourism based business can thrive, because more tourism means more jobs.
While our Veterans deserve honor, support, and thanks each and every day, next Wednesday, we have the opportunity to pause and recognize our nation's heroes in a variety of meaningful ways
October was filled with many exciting events, hearings, markups, votes, and visits with so many constituents, families, and advocates. Great things are happening in Florida's 12th district and I look forward to continuing my efforts to help our families, Veterans, and communities. Here are some highlights from October:
As Vice Chair of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, I have seen firsthand the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of our Veterans. I am forever grateful for our nation's true American heroes and their efforts to keep us safe. That is why I have been devoted to helping our Veterans transition to civilian life.
This week, the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues hosted an inaugural "Stand with Greece" policy summit at the U.S. Capitol.
This month was an exciting and busy month. It was a privilege to be in the presence of His Holiness Pope Francis, to meet with some constituents, and to continue my efforts to protect our nation's Veterans, taxpayers, and families. Here are some highlights from September:
This past month, I spent time travelling around FL-12 to meet with constituents and visit local business and organizations. Here are some highlights from August 2015:
In his State of the Union address, the President said: "Between now and this spring, we have a chance to negotiate a comprehensive agreement that prevents a nuclear-armed Iran; secures America and our allies – including Israel; while avoiding yet another Middle East conflict."
On October 1, 2013, Healthcare.gov – the main website for the President's health care law – went live. The President and his allies in the House and Senate sold this law on a number of promises – the ability to keep your plan and doctor, and an average reduction of $2500 in premiums for a family of four, to name a few.
The most recently released economic report says that the country added 248,000 jobs to the workforce in September.
As a second generation Greek American, I have a firsthand understanding of the importance and power of the American dream, as well as, the sensitivity and passion surrounding the issue of immigration reform. This matter becomes even more delicate when it involves children, who must always be dealt with in a thoughtful, compassionate and fair manner.
As a member of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, I participate in hearings and briefings on a regular basis about all aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare. It seems that each week, Obamacare brings more bad news, from cancelled plans and rising health care costs to limiting options for doctors and medications.
Florida's economy is rebounding. In the Tampa Bay area – defined as Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Hernando counties– the labor force has increased and the unemployment rate has decreased every year since 2009. The products of pro-growth policies at the state level have contributed to this growth.
April contains both the day by which most Americans must file their federal income taxes, as well as Tax Freedom Day – the point in the year when the average American has finally earned enough just to pay off his or her annual tax bill.
Identity theft is a serious crime that affected 12.6 million people in 2012 with damages to the economy totaling more than $21 billion – not to mention the immeasurable damage to the victims' credit ratings. Increasingly, criminals are stealing social security numbers from taxpayers and filing forged tax returns to get fraudulent refunds.
As your Representative in Congress, I believe that I have a solemn duty to honor and serve those that protect and have protected our freedoms and liberties.
Homeowners across the country are currently facing astronomical flood insurance rate increases as a result of reforms made to address the solvency and affordability of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which protects homeowners from flood losses.
Next week, we'll be holding a Health and Wellness Fair to help residents in Florida's 12th Congressional District navigate the changes to Medicaid and understand the options they have through Medicare. Organizations will also be onsite, providing information about the health and wellness services available in our district. We hope you can make it!
Since September is Suicide Prevention Month, I wanted to take a moment to discuss one of the most pressing issues facing our military and veterans communities: military suicide. As Vice-Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, I have the privilege to serve our nation's heroes by ensuring they have access to the resources they need when they return home.
Disasters can strike at any time, often with little warning. As a representative from coastal Florida, Congressman Bilirakis regularly meets with local emergency managers to ensure our communities are ready to respond to a hurricane or other weather-related disasters. However, we must all do our part to ensure we are prepared before a disaster strikes.
On July 2, 2013, the Administration announced it would be delaying the implementation of ObamaCare's employer mandate. In response, Congressman Bilirakis released the following statement:
Congressman Bilirakis Op-Ed: Remove stigma so more veterans get help for head injuries
Congressman Bilirakis will be holding his Seventh Annual Veterans' Resource Fair on Saturday, June 29, at River Ridge High School. The event will feature a musical performance by Tony Orlando and a Presentation of Colors by AVAST, the nation's only all-amputee color guard. We hope you can attend this event that honors those who protect and serve our country!
?Two months before the Boston attack, Florida Rep. Gus Bilirakis filed legislation that called for strengthening the country?s student visa background checks and better monitoring student status once they are on U.S. soil. He had filed similar legislation in the past four congressional sessions.?
Congressman Bilirakis is working to boost the economy by connecting jobseekers with businesses that are hiring. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to connect with potential employers by attending our FREE event!
On this 10th Anniversary of the War in Iraq, we remember our brave servicemen and women. To the 4,500 troops who died there; to the more than 30,000 wounded Americans who have come home ? your selfless sacrifices will never be forgotten.
This week, we have been working to find a long-term solution to the automatic spending cuts and significant tax increases, more commonly known as the Fiscal Cliff, which will take effect January 1, unless Congress and the President can reach a bi-partisan agreement.
Before the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, Congressman Bilirakis, Vice-Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, urges the U.S. Senate to pass H.R. 4057, which will increase veterans' access to valuable information on how to best use their GI benefits.
On September 11, a heavily armed group executed a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glenn Doherty. The following remarks were prepared for delivery by Congressman Gus Bilirakis for today?s Foreign Affairs Committee hearing regarding these attacks:
Congressman Bilirakis, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Congressional Anti-Terrorism Caucus, today joined over 50 of his Congressional colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama and U.S. Secretary of State Clinton to demand answers regarding the security failures that led to the September 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
Congressman Bilirakis joined Jack and Tedd of WFLA Tampa Bay to discuss the need to strengthen the screening process for those entering the United States on student visa.
Op-Ed by Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis (R-FL)

Gus wrote an Op-Ed titled "Avoid 'Taxmageddon:' Low taxes help all Americans," which appeared in the Tampa Tribune on August 7, 2012:
Gus, the Vice Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, attended a joint hearing on July 25 with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki titled "Back From the Battlefield: DoD and VA Collaboration to Assist Service Members Returning to Civilian Life." His question was about efforts to combat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD.
As a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, Gus spoke on the House Floor on July 19 to recall a somber anniversary that has pained the Cypriot and Hellenic communities for the past 38 years. Watch here:

Gus spoke on the House Floor in advance of a vote to repeal the Democratic health care overhaul, which has raised taxes, cost jobs, and limited personal control of health care. Americans deserve meaningful and affordable health care reform that will lower costs, protect consumers, and increase accessibility, while allowing Americans to control their own health decisions.
Last week, Gus, who is Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, presented military service medals to two constituents.
In a surprise ceremony, Gus presented the Bronze Star Medal, along with a host of other service medals, to Palm Harbor resident Robert Smiddy, who served as part of the U.S. Army's 97th Infantry Division during World War II.
My FOX Tampa Bay (July 2, 2012) - It was an unfortunate reality for Bucs fans the last two seasons: if you wanted to see the home team at Raymond James Stadium, you likely had to buy a ticket.
Thirteen of the last 16 home games were blacked out on television in the area. That may change after the NFL confirmed a Wall Street Journal report about new blackout rules.
On Thursday, Gus addressed a forum to highlight the treatment of Coptic Christians in Egypt, and promote religious freedom in the Middle East and worldwide.
On Tuesday, Gus gathered leaders within the tax and consumer protection industry to discuss the growing problem of tax refund fraud.
Since 2008, the IRS has identified 470,000 incidents of identity theft affecting more than 390,000 taxpayers. After reviewing only 30 percent of the 100 million returns filed this year, the IRS has already confirmed 2.6 million cases of fraud.
The following article appeared in the Tampa Bay Times on June 22, 2012:
It was one of those "read the fine print" moments.
As Vice Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Gus chaired a hearing on June 19 examining the Department of Veterans Affairs disability claims backlog.
During the hearing, Gus also addressed a problem with the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), which is meant to provide one year of training and education benefits to certain unemployed veterans.

On Tuesday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its annual long-term budget outlook, again confirming that unless Washington makes significant fiscal reforms, American families face a bleak fiscal and economic future.
We once again find ourselves at the start of the Atlantic Hurricane season. Last year, Americans spanning the eastern seaboard experienced the impacts of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Many communities in the northeast are still working to recover from those storms.

One of the 16 Americans charged in Egypt for promoting democracy and religious freedom is John Tomaszewski, a former staff member for Congressman Bilirakis.
Tomaszewski was in Egypt when a travel ban came into force and was one of six Americans who sought refuge at the American embassy. After the travel ban was released, he recently returned to Washington.

On Monday, Gus toured the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital in Tampa, which is undergoing an expansion to accommodate the growing need of women's and infant's care in the Tampa Bay area. Sadly, many of the infants at the NICU are born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), meaning they were born to a woman addicted to drugs.

Last week, Gus visited with 970 WFLA about the ongoing debt negotiations and his commitment to finding a responsible solution to the nation's fiscal problems that controls federal spending and moves America toward a balanced budget without raising taxes.
Listen to clips from the interview here (caution: the audio is very loud):
Washington, DC (July 13, 2011) – Since being elected to Congress, Gus has made it one of his top priorities to be a voice for all religious minorities wherever they may be persecuted and to continuously work in a bipartisan manner with his colleagues to condemn violations of religious freedom throughout the world.
Many of the nation's veterans are struggling under oppressive debt, poor credit, and rising unemployment. In fact nearly 1 million veterans are unemployed right now, and nearly one-third of those out of work are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. For America's heroes, this is not acceptable. These soldiers have upheld their promise to America, now it's time for America to help them.

I also cosponsored H. Res. 1522, which passed unanimously, 408-0.
Throughout the healthcare debate, Democrats claimed that if you like your health care plan, you'd be able to keep that health care plan.
But it's more than evident that just a few months after enacting Obamacare, that is not the case. Millions of people will have no choice but to switch their health care plans.
Democrats this week called the House back to Washington for another last-minute federal government bailout of more than $26 billion. It is another in a long line of perpetual bailout bills coming out of Washington.
