Frequently Asked Questions - Undergraduate Admissions

A. Yes, an application to the University of Miami is required as well as a supplemental application to the Frost School of Music.

A. No, please do not wait. Please submit all your application materials as soon as possible, as your application will not be considered complete until all elements are received by the appropriate offices.

A. Yes, the Frost School of Music participates in the University’s Early Action program (Early Decision is not available for Frost applicants). Please visit the How To Apply page for more information.

A. All programs/majors, except the Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry, must complete a video prescreen and audition in order to be considered for admission to the FROST School of Music.

The only degree at the Frost School of Music that does not require an applicant to be a musician and prescreen/audition is the Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry.

A. Apply to the University of Miami online via the Common Application and submit the Frost School supplemental application. From the list of available dates, indicate your audition date choice on the Frost School of Music supplemental application. Once your application and fees are received, and you pass a prescreening we will confirm your audition date.

A. All supplemental materials should be submitted through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. More details and information can be found under First-Year Admission Requirements. 

A. All Early Action (EA) applicants who are approved to audition after a review of their video prescreens MUST audition on campus during the EA audition date which will be in December. For Regular Decision (RD) applicants an in-person audition is preferred and is required for some instruments/genres. Most classical applicants can audition via a video recording submitted online as part of the Frost supplemental application. In some cases, a virtual audition may be approved.

If you’ve submitted your Frost School of Music supplemental application with your audition date choice and then realize you need to change your date, please contact the Office of Admission at the Frost School of Music at (305-284-6168). There will be a $25 charge to change a confirmed audition date.

A. Audition requirements can be found here. All specific audition requirement questions should be directed to your program faculty.

A. If your program requires a portfolio (composition, media writing & production, music engineering technology), please upload your portfolio with your Frost supplemental application. Check the Audition & Portfolio Requirements page for specific requirements. Remember, a program portfolio is not the same as a video prescreening on your instrument/voice. Applicants to the programs listed above must submit the prescreen and a portfolio.

A. Admission notifications are sent in late January for Early Action applicants and mid-March for Regular Decision applicants.

A. No. We do not offer deferment for undergraduate applicants.

A. The Frost School of Music offers merit scholarships based on both your talent and/or academic qualifications. All you have to do is apply and audition by the deadlines, and you are automatically considered. There is not a separate scholarship application.  Applicants that wish to be considered for the University of Miami premier scholarships should apply Early Action.

A. You may apply for need-based financial aid. For questions or additional information please refer to the Office of Financial Assistance.

A. When planning a visit to campus, we recommend you try to incorporate several activities. A meeting with the Director of Admission and Recruitment, class visits, faculty meetings, and campus tours may be available.
