James Loch was born on 7 May 1780 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 He is the son of George Loch and Mary Adam.3 He married, firstly, Ann Orr, daughter of Patrick Orr, in 1810.2 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Mary Pearson, daughter of John Pearson, on 2 December 1847.3 He died on 28 June 1855 at age 75 at Albemarle Street, London, England.2
He lived at Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, Drylaw.1 He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1801.2 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 15 November 1806 entitled to practise as a barrister.2 He was auditor of various Scottish estates, where he helped oversee various clearances, including Sutherlandshire during 1811-1820.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)
