T... more This article highlights the findings of a study that explored girls’ issues in weekly boarding. The objectives of this research were twofold: (1) explore the problems that exist among the girls in weekly boarding at Chadiza Day Secondary School; (2) determine how problems among the girls in weekly boarding day secondary schools impede their education. This study used a mixed method research employing a case study. The study sample consisted of 38 participants: 12 girls, 10 boys, 10 teachers (5 female teachers and 5 male teachers), 2 guidance teachers, 2 administrators and 2 parents. Participants were sampled using snowball, purposive and convenience sampling methods. It was undertaken in Kabwe urban District, covering three institutions: Nkrumah University, Zambian Open University and Mulungushi University simple random sampling technique was used to select the three institutions and respondents. This study used a descriptive research method, employing the use of a questionnaire and interview guide to collect data. Thematic data analysis was the predominant method employed in the study. Findings indicate that many factors in the home, school and circumstantial environments impede participation and performance of distance education students in accessing and being retained in their much-desired formal education at university and college levels. The study was anti-positivistic and adopted the mixed methods research. Targeting Kasenengwa District, 50 respondents: 8 head teachers of all the 8 secondary schools in the District and 42 heads of departments were sampled conveniently. Data collected was analyzed descriptively and thematically. Daniel Goleman’s theory of Emotional Intelligence guided this study. The major findings of this study show that secondary school head teachers on the average were poorer in Emotional awareness (EA) than in Emotional Management (EM), Social Emotional Awareness (ESA) and Relationship Management (RM). This paper presents the findings of a study that sought to establish the emerging and digital technologies being used to enhance the teaching and learning of ODL students with disabilities at Nkhruma University. The study used a case study design. The population comprised all students with visual and hearing impairment under ODL and their lecturers. A total sample of fifty-five (55) participants was employed and snowball sampling technique was utilized. The instruments used for data collection were interview guides and observation schedules. Data was analyzed thematically. The objective of this study was to explore teaching practices of student-teachers pursuing their bachelor’s degrees at Zambian Open University, University of Africa and Nkrumah University College. A mixed method approach was used. The population of the study included all student-teachers who undertook teaching practice at the three universities in 2015. About 360 student-teachers were sampled from the three universities. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample the respondents. Questionnaire and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were the two main data collection tools used. Descriptive and thematic methods were predominantly used to analyse the findings. The knowledge gaps were; how do guidance teachers who do not know sign language provide HIV/AIDS counseling to pupils who only benefit from the use of sign language? Do the pupils with hearing impairment really get what they communicate to them orally? These questions motivated this study. Since it was a qualitative study, a case study design became appropriate. 25 pupils and 5 teachers formed the study sample. Interviews were used to collect data, which was analysed using thematically. The researchers observed that the guidance teachers did not have any training in sign language meanwhile some schools had over ten pupils with hearing impairment who like other hearing pupils needed to receive HIV/AIDS counseling. The study was undertaken to analyze student’s perspectives on enhancing research in Open and Dist... more The study was undertaken to analyze student’s perspectives on enhancing research in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in Lusaka. A descriptive survey design was used. The sample comprised 25 students in five institutions of learning in Lusaka who were purposively and randomly selected. Data was collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interview guides, while analysis of data was done using SPSS and themes. The study revealed that there are different student perspectives on enhancing research in ODL during COVID-19. There is a dire need to enhance research in ODL among students, and that students are positive about enhancing research in ODL. The study established that enhancing research in ODL can in turn improve the quality of ODL programmes and increase the student’s research skills.
