[Future Cities Africa Clip] Dr Thina Nzo (Ph.D) explores the governmental roles in advancing green hydrogen development in South Africa. At the national level, the president is pursuing international investments and partnerships for the country's Just Energy transition and economic growth. The Premier's office, specifically in the Northern Cape province, plays a significant role in this initiative. At the local level, district municipalities, such as Namakwa, are expected to contribute to regional planning and provide essential infrastructure and services to support the green hydrogen business. However, Namakwa District, a rural area with a small population and limited economic activities, may face challenges in generating the necessary revenue to develop the infrastructure required to accommodate the projected population growth and industrial activities by 2035. Existing infrastructure will be under strain to meet the demands of the growing population and industries, emphasising the need for substantial financing for infrastructure development. South Africa’s Renewable Energy Revolution - More Households and Businesses Turning to Energy Alternatives ⚡♻️ In the face of the recent energy crisis, more households and businesses are turning to self-funded renewable energy products, according to recent surveys. Research by The Competition Commission South Africa and the South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey (SAREGS) have highlighted the growing number of individuals and businesses investing in renewable energy, catapulting the country towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. One of the survey’s key findings is that most South Africans, including small and medium-sized businesses, are investing in standalone renewable energy products such as solar PV panels, inverters, and storage batteries. These investments are primarily self-funded, with only a small percentage of participants using external financial support from banks or other financial institutions.
