💧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗘 𝗢𝗙 (𝗢𝗨𝗥) 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 In the latest issue of the JSE (Johannesburg Stock Exchange) Quarterly (July/September 2024), a compelling special report sheds light on South Africa’s vulnerable water systems and infrastructure. This report not only highlights the challenges and growing risks but also serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for innovative solutions in this sector. South Africa’s Blue Drop Report starkly highlights the deteriorating state of the country's water infrastructure. Of the 958 water supply systems assessed, only 26 achieved the prestigious Blue Drop Certification, a significant decline from 44 systems in 2014. Alarming increases in systems classified as critically underperforming were noted, jumping from 174 in 2014 to 277 in 2023. These figures underscore the urgent need for reform in water management, exacerbated by systemic challenges such as financial mismanagement and inadequate maintenance. For private water care companies operating within South Africa, these findings present both challenges and opportunities. The decline in drinking water quality, as evidenced by a regression in microbiological compliance from 5% in 2014 to 46% in 2023, demands immediate and innovative interventions. Furthermore, with 64% of wastewater treatment works at high or critical risk, the private sector’s expertise in infrastructure development, efficient process management, and advanced technological solutions becomes indispensable. The Department of Water and Sanitation’s Blue, Green, and No Drop reports serve as a clarion call for collaboration between the public and private sectors. Government efforts, though commendable, are insufficient to reverse the ongoing decline. Private sector participation can provide the technical skills, investment, and innovative approaches needed to stabilize and improve the country’s water infrastructure. However, this participation hinges on the creation of a transparent, accountable, and supportive regulatory environment that encourages sustained engagement and investment. South Africa’s water crisis is not just a governmental challenge but a national one, requiring the collective effort of both public and private stakeholders. With strategic partnerships, the private sector can play a pivotal role in addressing the infrastructural and operational deficiencies identified in these reports, ensuring sustainable and safe water services for all South Africans.

At Watercare Innovations (WCI) we understand that running a system that is regularly cleaned impacts energy efficiency and savings. The first step towards a successful programme is, therefore, some form of pre-commission cleaning, for newly constructed cooling systems, or in-service/out-of-service cleaning (on-line/off-line cleaning) for existing operational systems. The second step, pre-filming, is the formation of a film to act as a barrier to corrosion, thereby passivating the metal surfaces. Reflecting back on Olivier Kapya and Dawie Terblanche Andries’s earlier visit at one of our valued clients in Mali, our objectives were clear. Ensure efficient chemical treatment program is in place, install a new bleed-off panel and perform an out-of-service cleaning of the condenser tubes using one of our chemical blends, thus providing the below benefits: - Minimize scale and corrosion build-up in the systems - Maximize equipment life - Establish an impervious, corrosion resistant film - Maximize energy efficiency
