#whatwelearntthisweek This week our second-year students tested their timber structural designs! In the Building Materials 254 module, taught by Dr Jacques Kruger, teams of students received a limited number of timber pieces, and they had to design and construct a truss within certain height and length restrictions, taking material properties such as strength in compression vs tension, anisotropy, knots, burls and orientation into consideration. This is another great example of scaffolded learning. In their first year, our students learned how to determine the compressive and tensile forces in trusses using hand calculations. Next year, they will learn how to model and analyse trusses using the finite element method. The second-year class wrapped up the semester with testing their trusses until failure in the 2MN Instron testing machine, a class braai, and the winning team receiving their prize!

#whatwelearntthisweek This week our third-year students had an incredible hands-on experience at the Berg River Dam! They explored key hydraulic structures they’ve been learning to design in their Hydraulics 354 module, taught by Dr Adele Bosman, including the impressive spillway, pump station, and even ventured down the dry well of the intake tower. Seeing these structures up close brought their theoretical knowledge to life, offering a unique perspective on the critical infrastructure that supports our water systems. A big thank you to Amos Mgidi and Margaritha Cox of the Department of Water and Sanitation for making it all possible!

Introducing Ernst du Preez, Managing Director of IMECH Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd, who is a team member in the #Fire #Safety Engineering / Fire #Protection #Engineering masters group. “I find this programme excellent! I love it." I have personally learned so much to date and it is actually helping me a lot in my work and will help me much in future. It actually provides you with the necessary knowledge and confidence to inform clients why a certain scenario or situation is dangerous and not recommended and to act in a professional manner. This programme is definitely recommended to anyone involved in the fire industry and it has been a very long-awaited course for the South African building industry. I have registered as a Professional Engineer in 2002 and started my own consulting engineering company in 2004. I have been working in the building services industry for 26 years and during my career, fire has always ended up on my table and at some point, I could not ignore it any longer. Clients wanted HVAC, Wet Services and Fire under one umbrella. Bottom line is I had to expand my knowledge in this area. And what better way to do it than to enrol for this course. When I got an email about this course, I instantly knew I had to do it.” Ernst has been working hard this year and learning lot. #whatwelearntthisweek This week our second-year students worked on a group assignment in their Strength of Materials 254 module, taught by Prof Adewumi John Babafemi. The students were tasked with analysing a portal frame structure subjected to wind loads by simplifying it to a two-dimensional (2D) model. The assignment required them to perform hand-calculations through the Stiffness Method and use modern structural analysis software. They also used tools like MS Excel, MATLAB, and Python to verify their calculations. Through this approach, they learn how to use structural analysis software, and the importance of validating computer-generated results—a critical skill in structural engineering.

Read all about how Raphael Thompson experienced the week-long Trilateral Staff Development and Exchange Program in Hamburg, Germany. Participants explored how sustainability can be incorporated across all facets of higher education. It will be exciting to see how Mr Thompson integrates these ideas into our laboratory and workshop spaces at the Civil Engineering Department!
I would like to to extend my gratitude and thanks to the Universität of Hamburg for hosting the Trilateral Staff Development and Exchange Program (TriStax) in collaboration with Stellenbosch University and Northwestern University (USA). It was an enriching experience to engage with colleagues from these leading institutions and explore how sustainability can be integrated holistically across all aspects of higher education from teaching and curriculum development to research and campus life. The interactive sessions, thought provoking discussions and collaborative group projects offered a fresh international perspective on how we can implement sustainability both on campus and within our communities at large. I am excited to bring these ideas back to my own work environment and contribute to meaningful change. Special thanks to the organisers, facilitators and my fellow participants for fostering such a welcoming and stimulating environment. I look forward to staying connected and applying the knowledge we’ve gained to drive sustainability forward at our respective institutions.

Say hello to Mufarisi Manyuha (AIFireE) who shared her experience so far as a #Masters of #Engineering program student with us. “The Master of Engineering degree that is offered by the Stellenbosch University has greatly broadened my understanding of what Fire Engineering is about. In my current job I work with fire protection systems with a mechanical perspective. This course has presented me with the basic and fundamental understanding of the behaviour of fires, and currently looking at other aspects such as structural behaviour, performance-based designs, human behaviour in fires etc. These are aspects that I was previously not exposed to. The course is facilitated and structured encourages me to view fires not only from a mechanical engineer’s perspective but also from other disciplines as well as appreciate the needs that the end user(s) of a building/ or structure may have. The master’s degree is and will continue to assist me in understanding the applications of Fire Engineering holistically from the design phase to the operations and maintenance of fire safety measures in buildings. The course also provides a good networking opportunity as you get to engage with students from different career backgrounds and experiences which aids in peer learning. I recommend this master’s programme to prospective students as more professionals are needed in this field to help improve the understanding and implementation of fire safety in our society.” A huge thank you for your testimonial Mufarisi Manyuha! Curious about what our registered students think of the #Masters of #Engineering program? Wonder no more! Meet Aslam Haffejee. He is a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). Here is what he had to say: “This program has been incredibly insightful, especially with my background in the fire industry. Learning in-depth about fire dynamics and proper design for risk mitigation has been a real eye-opener. It's highlighted how many designs in the industry aren't being done correctly, particularly the lack of performance-based design and the prevalence of non-compliant 'rational designs'. The skills I'm gaining are directly applicable to my work, where I'm involved in numerous fire engineering projects and oversee consultant designs. The knowledge I've gained is already proving invaluable. I highly recommend this program to any prospective student serious about advancing their career in fire safety engineering.” Thank you Aslam for sharing your insights with us! Want to find out more?
