  • Africa Month 2024 Wozani maÁfrica Amahle. Sons and Daughters of the Soil. We are calling you to join us in celebrating Africa Month from 1 – 31 May. South Africa marks Africa Month and Africa Day in May 2024, along with the rest of the continent. The month is an opportunity to promote African unity, deeper regional integration and recommit Africa to a common destiny. Africa Month and Africa day are moments for the continent to pause, reflect, and celebrate our unique African identity and cultural expression. The 10th edition of Africa month is celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom: Building a Better Africa and a Better World’’. Planned activities over the month will culminate with Africa Day celebrations on 25 May 2024. The annual commemoration of Africa Day marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. Today known as the Africa Union (AU), the organisation promotes greater unity and solidarity between African countries. The AU is at the forefront of peace, security and stability on the continent. The Africa Month programme is conceptualized within the context of continental frameworks and policies such as the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance and the AU Agenda 2063. The African Union acknowledges that sport, arts, culture and heritage provide an opportunity to amplify, streamline, enhance and contribute to Africa’s socio-economic development and integration. The programme is also anchored on the country's foreign policy as it relates to the African continental Agenda. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has a critical and central role to play in shaping societies and building a desirable nation and the "Continent We Want" – a continent free from GBV, racism, crime, conflicts and poverty, just to mention but few. These celebrations also coincide with the commemoration of 30 Years of Freedom in South Africa, a year-long programme to celebrate and reflect on the progress government has made in improving the lives of the South African population since 1994. African art, fashion, films and storytelling play a big role in the African narrative.
