I had the privilege of being part of the organising committee for Nedlac's 29th Annual Summit, led by Lisa SEFTEL, Nedlac's Executive Director. Planning for this milestone event began in April, in close collaboration with the Department of Employment and Labour and the International Labour Organization. The end result was truly something special – a moment that I wish I could have bottled up and saved. The summit kicked off with a symposium on social dialogue institutions in Africa (held on 5 September), which sparked fascinating discussions about the legislative processes in different African countries, highlighting both their unique approaches and shared challenges. Having recently joined Nedlac under Programme 4, which is linked to the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) – a body born from the 2018 Presidential Jobs Summit, organised by (you guessed it!) Nedlac – I’ve come to deeply appreciate the critical role that social dialogue and stakeholder engagement play in shaping South Africa's future. As a young South African, I found it particularly meaningful to reflect on the impact Nedlac has had over the past 30 years – the same age as me! The organisation has played a key role in shaping labour relations legislation that directly affects the lives of so many, such as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Unemployment Insurance Act, and the National Minimum Wage Act, to name a few. The summit also featured responses from notable figures like outgoing Business Unity SA CEO, Cas Coovadia, and honoured past convenors, including former the dti (Department of Trade and Industry: Republic of South Africa) Minister, Ebrahim Patel. As we continue on South Africa’s journey towards a just transition to a low-carbon economy, Nedlac’s rich history and leadership provide valuable lessons for the road ahead. #JustTransition #SocialDialogue #NedlacAnnualSummit
