Very pleased to see that the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust awarded its first “New Frontiers Research Award”. We are proud to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the research and design of this generous multi-year award. One that gives exceptionally talented early-to-mid-career researchers based in SA, the freedom and flexibility to pursue bold ideas and push the boundaries of knowledge in their fields of study. https://lnkd.in/d7FKdHvn. See the attached for the comments we submitted on the DMRE's draft integrated resource plan for 2023. We focus on the electricity demand projections - this is a key component of IRP planning because it is key to assessing how much new generation capacity may be required, which types of generation resources are required to meet changing demand and how much transmission and distribution networks should be expanded and where. Our main concern is that the IRP 2023 supply scenarios seemed to have been based on one very optimistic forecast of future electricity demand - the IRP must at minimum consider a range of possible demand outcomes. We also demonstrate that econometric forecasts can provide a very useful 'sense check' to end-use/bottom-up approaches. https://lnkd.in/dxuTDmnm
