In celebration of Global Handwashing Day, Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) partnered with the Department of Water and Sanitation Limpopo regional office to conduct an awareness campaign at Leboeng Primary School at Fetakgomo-Tubatse local municipality in Sekhukhune District Municipality. During the campaign, emphasis was placed on the importance of washing hands with soap and water, while also addressing issues of water infrastructure vandalism, environmental impact from littering, and the need for water conservation practices. LNW generously donated handwashing soaps, wet wipes, toilet rolls, dignitary packs, and plants to the school. This initiative not only highlighted the significance of proper hand hygiene but also underscored the importance of preserving water resources and promoting sanitation practices in schools and communities. #GlobalHandwashingDay2024 #WaterIsLife #SanitationIsDignity #LNWcares #LNWonTheMove

15 October is Global Handwashing Day, celebrated annually to encourage people worldwide to wash hands with soap to prevent life-threatening diseases. As we commemorate this important day, it is crucial to be conscious of water conservation. Remember to turn off the tap while scrubbing and use a moderate amount of water to rinse. By following these simple steps, we can significantly reduce water wastage and contribute to the preservation of this precious resource. Do your part, save water, every drop counts. #GlobalHandwashingDay2024 #SaveWater #SaveLife

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms Pemmy Majodina, hosted the Women in Leadership Dialogue on 4 October 2024 in Tshwane. LNW women were well represented in the dialogue. At the onset, the Minister commended the leadership of the department and its entities for such a noble initiative and said it represents a significant moment in the collective efforts to advance gender equality and women's empowerment within the Department. “We are here to take stock of the strides we are making and the role that women in leadership play to expand access to basic services, especially water and sanitation provision. At the same time, we must use this occasion to honour those who came before us. We must pay tribute to the heroines who paved the way for us. As women of today, we are indeed standing on soldiers of giants whose vision continues to define our path towards an equal and non-sexist society,” Minister Majodina said. No gender equality – no sustainability. The Minister said that lack of access to clean and reliable water supply can be particularly devastating to women. Collecting water by carrying 25 liters on the head or pushing wheelbarrows while pregnant can cause difficulties in pregnancy and other reproductive health consequences. She said women who lack safe water during pregnancy may get hookworm, which may cause low birth weight. Giving birth in a setting without safe drinking water or sanitation has a negative impact on the health, hygiene, and survival of both mother and child. Lack of access to water and sanitation at home and school also impacts negatively on girl children. Lack of drinking water during school days affects the learning environment for both students and learners. e.g. if there is no water, learners are released from schools, and school contact time is wasted. “As women leaders in the sector, how are we intervening to find a permanent solution to this tragic situation? Together, we must make a solemn pledge that “never again must any South African woman be placed in a situation where they have to carry water on their heads or push wheelbarrows,” she said. LNW Board member Adv Makhwedi Magopa-Madisa participated in the panel discussion of ways to reorganise women in the water and sanitation sector for a programmatic approach, while LNW Regional Manager for Mopani, Ms Nthabiseng Mohobela, participated in the tactics and strategies of achieving women empowerment and gender equity. “As women in leadership in the water and sanitation sector, we carry a responsibility to prioritise this challenge.” Under the Employment Equity Act, the national and provincial targets were set at 60/40. LNW Board reviewed and revised this target to 50/50 for greater equity. LNW promotes a zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment and bullying against women in the workplace. The Board approved a Sexual Harassment Policy in 2023 to protect female employees and create a safe working environment.

Today, we held our Limpopo Branch Function in Polokwane, facilitated by our MC Jonas Tshikundamalema, Director and Chairman at Mantengu Mining. The event featured insightful presentations from CESA and guest speakers from key organisations. Livhu Motabatsindi, CESA Limpopo Branch Chairperson and Manager at Muteo Consulting, delivered the welcome address. He expressed that the Limpopo province is at a pivotal moment, facing a range of infrastructure challenges that also present us with remarkable opportunities for growth and improvement. He added that:”The need for enhanced infrastructure in the province is a call to action for us all. It invites us to leverage our expertise in engineering and project management to develop sustainable solutions that not only improve infrastructure development but also fosters economic growth.  Our President, David-F Leukes, emphasised the need for "Diverse and Collaborative Leadership - Stronger Together to Secure a Sustainable Future for All." During his presentation, he explained that several factors contributed to the ongoing water crisis in Limpopo including the challenges faced by local government to manage and maintain water infrastructure effectively, leading to widespread shortages and health risks associated with poor water quality. “Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach. Stakeholders must advocate for better planning and resource allocation while fostering collaboration between municipalities and water boards to avoid a blame game that detracts from finding viable solutions.” Leukes emphasised the importance of partnership and collaboration and encouraged many of the stakeholders present at the event to engage with companies, who hold certifications from credible bodies, like CESA, to ensure that accountability and service quality could be enhanced across the board. Regina Ravele, Limpopo Provincial Manager at MISA, was a guest speaker and her presentation was entitled: "Local Government Technical Capacity – Infrastructure Delivery," while Dr Cornelius Ruiters CEO at Lepelle Northern Water presented on: "Water Services - Infrastructure." Our CEO, Christopher Campbell, moderated the Q&A session, providing insightful feedback on national infrastructure issues and solutions. A big thank you to all our speakers, participants, partners and media for attending the event. Let's continue working together towards a sustainable future! #CESAAdvocacy #CESABranchFunction  #Limpopo  #WeAreCESA
