Couldn't agree more. Social performance needs to evolve from being a reactionary measure to avert project failure, to more of an integral part of the project at all stages of the life cycle to ensure success.

Social Performance Lead - Capital Project Portfolio

Great article by ERM today about three stakeholder-centric approaches to address community issues in critical minerals supply. (https://lnkd.in/dFqr6cW3). Perhaps the most important one for me is to "Embed social performance into project teams". This is my 6th year working for Anglo American doing exactly that! It is the Capital Project Team, who are responsible for mine design, new technology and expansion projects, that hold the largest budget and drive permitting. Being a Social Performance resource 'ingrained' within a Team of Project Managers, Engineers, Procurement Specialists, Planners, Accountants, Permitting Specialists and others allows me to: 1. influence project design and execution so as to minimize negative and enhance positive impacts on stakeholders, 2. proactively engage with stakeholders on their concerns and expectations, 3. develop solutions collaboratively for local businesses’ inability to participate in upcoming new supply chains, 4. develop solutions for stakeholders’ low skills levels that could exclude them from working on technologically advance mining operations, 5. clearly articulate projects' impact on stakeholders and risk to the business to the Investment Committee or Board. Most critical minerals around the world are often heavily concentrated on Indigenous or local community lands. These lands are generally characterized by high poverty and unemployment levels. The graphic below (a combination of some of my previous visuals) illustrates the huge task ahead to secure the required metals and minerals to achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. We need responsible mining practices that will enable us to obtain the critical minerals required to make the energy transition work - we have no choice but to embed Social Performance into every capital project team that are responsible for delivering the next +300 new mines in the world. #socialperformance #socialimpact Mining Industry Professionals

In South Africa the construction, mining, and energy industries play a significant role in the economy. The value of social performance is particularly pronounced in these sectors that operate in diverse communities and often face complex social challenges. Addressing these challenges through effective social performance is not just about compliance; it's about building trust, reducing conflicts, and securing the social license to operate. Kumalo & Co. specialises in partnering with construction, mining, and energy projects to navigate these challenges. Our tailored solutions enable projects to integrate social goals into their project lifecycle, from planning to execution and beyond. By doing so, projects can enhance their reputation, mitigate risks, and create lasting positive legacies in the communities where they operate.
