MEMBER NEWS: ENERTRAG South Africa discusses renewable energy development on GreenCape podcast series Mercia Grimbeek, Head of Project Development at ENERTRAG South Africa, featured on the recent GreenCape podcast series, discussing the advancement of large-scale renewable energy projects in Mpumalanga. The podcast series is part of the Mpumalanga Policy Discussion Map initiative, developed with the support of the Royal Danish Embassy. This platform promotes dialogue on the Just Energy Transition in the province, focusing on the energy sector. In the interview with Michael Avery, Grimbeek highlighted ENERTRAG South Africa’s strategic investment in wind and solar projects in areas historically reliant on thermal and coal energy. She explained, “We made a strategic decision to develop renewable assets in regions where it was once considered unfeasible. Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA), in collaboration with GreenCape and the National Business Initiative (NBI), successfully hosted the CFA South Africa Project Workshop and Pitching Event on 17-18 July 2024 at the IDC in Sandton, Johannesburg. This event brought together the two selected phase 3 cohorts to showcase their groundbreaking initiatives across the renewable energy, transportation, agriculture, forestry, circular economy, and water sectors. The workshop provided a platform for these projects to connect with key stakeholders, share their visions, and explore potential funding opportunities. The energy and enthusiasm in the room were palpable, as participants engaged in meaningful discussions that have the potential to drive significant change in South Africa’s climate action landscape. In order to do this, the country can pursue multiple angles to scale the pipeline of investment-ready low-carbon and climate resilient projects. We’ve recently done some research mapping over 200 accelerators and incubators for climate projects in the nine countries where the CFA is currently active – Colombia, Egypt, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa, Türkiye, Uganda and Viet Nam.   Our conversations with accelerators suggest that there is appetite for greater coordination between accelerators to increase efficiencies and improve the chances of climate start-ups finding investment.   Read our Strategic Advisor Jeremy Gorelick’s blog to learn more about our findings.
