We are also witnessing how the fast-approaching implementation of local and global carbon taxes is forcing businesses to view financial and emissions savings as a single, all-inclusive strategy. Achieving a high renewable energy coverage has never been more important. We truly believe that the diversification and risk protection benefits offered by Discovery Green’s renewable energy platform uniquely allow businesses to meet their targets in a single, simplified transaction. I wrap up our five-part series on Discovery Green by touching on the features of the platform that place it in a category of its own – high coverage, low risk and supply flexibility to meet your business’s unique energy needs. I hope you enjoy. #TheFutureOfEnergy #DiscoveryGreen #RenewableEnergy #CarbonNeutral

With the launch of Discovery Bank Home Loans, Discovery Bank is now a full-service Bank in one app but buying a home is an investment that goes beyond money. The Discovery Bank team has captured this through our new At home with… series and I was asked to share one of the spaces in my home that I like the most. It’s a room where I spend a lot of time both working and relaxing and has a personal place for everyone in my family - including our dogs who also make the most of jumping all around it. Basically, it’s where all my hobbies and passions come together around me. Welcome to my home and the room where I get to do things I enjoy most… Look out for more At home with… as Adrian Gore and others share their favourite spaces at home and you can read more about Discovery Bank Home Loans at: https://lnkd.in/d4WcANgc I’d also love to hear about the rooms or places that mean the most to you. 🌸 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵: 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝘂𝗿𝘂𝘃𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗮 🌸 This Women’s Month we celebrate the incredible work of Dr Frenzar Tshiruruvhela, whose dedication is making a significant impact, especially in the fight against cervical cancer among women living with HIV in South Africa. Women living with HIV are six times more likely to develop cervical cancer compared to the general population. According to the World Health Organization, 5% of all cervical cancer cases are linked to HIV, and cervical cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths among young women. Having worked extensively in HIV facilities, Dr Tshiruruvhela observed that many women were reluctant to undergo pap smears, often delaying until the cancer had reached advanced stages. “It pushed me to ask why we still have such a high number of women who have advanced cervical cancer. This is one of the most curable cancers. I want to find the reasons why,” she asserts. By understanding patients’ fears and misconceptions, Dr Tshiruruvhela hopes to improve communication and encourage early testing. Dr Tshiruruvhela’s journey began in Ga-Masemola, Limpopo, where her desire to serve her community inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. She received the Discovery Foundation Grant in Rural Institutions for 2022/2023, supporting her work at Mokopane Hospital. She empowers patients and families to manage chronic conditions like diabetes and HIV through education. “You can’t even tell that this is the same patient that came to me in a wheelchair. These moments make me feel like I am doing something for our people. I am really making a positive impact,” says Dr Tshiruruvhela, referring to patients with HIV whose first visit to the clinic looked bleak. Despite challenges like long travel distances and medical stockouts, she is committed to providing compassionate care. #EmpoweringWomen #WomensMonth #CelebrateWomen #WomenInLeadership #Healthcare

Celebrating healthcare heroes in South Africa. The annual Rural Health Conference, hosted by the Rural Doctors Association of South Africa (RUDASA), recently brought together passionate healthcare professionals at the Olifants River Lodge, Mpumalanga. The event was an inspiring mix of networking, knowledge sharing, and recognition of the incredible work being done in rural health. Dr Vincent Maphai, Chairperson of the Discovery Foundation, delivered an inspiring keynote address, honouring the dedication of healthcare workers in our communities. He emphasized that “Rural health is vital to the future of South Africa. The commitment of everyone here today is what truly makes our country a better place. The Discovery Foundation exists to support your efforts, but you are the real heroes”. The conference featured diverse speakers, innovative sessions, and workshops designed to upskill rural healthcare workers in a dynamic, participatory environment. The conference also highlighted the vital work of RUDASA, Rural Nursing South Africa (RuNurSA), the Professional Association of Clinical Associates in South Africa (PACASA), and Rural Rehab South Africa (RuReSA) in advocating for better healthcare in rural areas. 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗗𝗿 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝘄𝗮𝗭𝘂𝗹𝘂-𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹. As we celebrate Women’s Month, it is an opportune moment to acknowledge healthcare professional, Dr Gillian Douglas, the Head of Psychology at Ngwelezana Tertiary Hospital in KwaZulu Natal and a recipient of the 2022/2023 Discovery Foundation Rural Institutional Awards. When Dr Douglas arrived at the hospital five years ago, the mental health landscape was bleak. The hospital had only two psychologists, and the surrounding 16 district hospitals had an additional two. This meant that four psychologists were responsible for the mental health needs of about three million people in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Dr Douglas emphasises a holistic approach, where staff are trained to recognise and address mental health problems early on. “We’re living in a community with high incidences of gender-based violence, sexual trauma, and all kinds of poverty. All those things have an impact on people’s mental health,” she explains. “One of the challenges we have is working in an area where going to see a psychologist is not necessarily people’s first line when they are dealing with relational issues,” she says. She recalls a story of a patient who walked two hours to her local district hospital and then took a bus in the middle of the night to Ngwelezana Hospital. “She’d arrived in the early hours of the morning having barely slept on the bus. She then waited until 11 o’clock to see me for one short hour and then had to redo that process,” she recalls. The grant from the Discovery Foundation will aid in further training, particularly in assessing children with developmental and intellectual disabilities and upskilling social workers, occupational therapists, and other doctors. Dr Douglas and her team have initiated an outreach programme. “The outreach has two components,” she explains, “One is to train and support the staff at these 16 district hospitals; nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and counsellors. The other side is providing clinical services.” This dual approach aims to empower local healthcare providers while directly addressing the mental health needs of the community. #WomensMonth
