October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and for this month’s feature, we had the opportunity to meet with New Business Developer Reece Carstens from COMMUNITY KEEPERS to learn about the services they offer, the stigma that surrounds mental health in South Africa and shared some tips on improving mental health in the workplace. Community Keepers is a local NGO that has established psychosocial support in 89 low-income schools in South Africa, with a holistic service that considers both their clients, namely students and schools, and the well-being of their employees - a truly inspiring business model and a great feature for October. SELLING PRODUCTS IS NOT ENOUGH. In June 16, 2023 we launched CoffeeMM Academy, a leg of our company that focuses mainly on skills development in areas such as entrepreneurship, barista training, coffee roasting and hospitality sector talent development. To date we have trained well over 300 young people, some who have gone to find jobs around the world. We have had people sign up for our courses who had not been working for two years who found work in the hospitality industry shortly upon completion of our course. Last week I stumbled on a young man called Deon who approached me and said "sir I finished a course from CoffeeMM Academy earlier in the year after finishing matric in 2023 and had no idea on what to do next. Since then I've found work at vida e caffè and I'm loving every minute of it..." It's stories like these that inspire us to keep going and investing in the skills development project of our company. We are playing our part in changing the lives of the next generation. It's hard being young and not having opportunities, that is why every company big or small MUST use its resources to make impact and difference in the lives of young people. His goal is to take his new skills and help upskill others at his church - what a great endeavour!
