Last week, we proudly celebrated the graduation of the remarkable young women from the Phakama Women Academy. This is an initiative we’ve supported in mentoring young female jobseekers in the communications and marketing fields, as they enter the world of work with knowledge and confidence. Another thing we do as an active force for good in society. Over the past six weeks, these inspiring individuals engaged in workshops, delving into critical discussions and debates on pressing issues that affect their lives and communities. Through interactive video materials and role-playing, the workshops transformed learning into a dynamic experience, allowing the young women to connect deeply with the content. We were so inspired and privileged to be a part of your journey. Your achievements mark not just an end, but the beginning of your story. Congratulations again, graduates! We can’t wait to see the incredible impact you will make in the world! #YourStoryMatters #PhakamaWomenAcademy

What a week! London Investment Week has wrapped up, and we’re so grateful for the learnings and connections made. This year’s focus on Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) truly showcased their power in driving economic growth and sustainability. We had exciting discussions about innovative financing options for SMMEs, along with a strong emphasis on the need for tech adoption to boost efficiency and market reach. Sustainability was a major theme, with inspiring sessions on integrating eco-friendly practices while remaining profitable. Plus, the networking opportunities were invaluable, as entrepreneurs connected with investors to shape the future! A huge thank you to everyone who participated and shared their insights. Together, we can unlock the potential of SMMEs and create a resilient economy! What were your key takeaways? Let us know in the comments. The One Young World Summit 2024 may be over, but the impact made isn't. We couldn’t be prouder of how our 21 Absa Ambassadors showed up as social change-makers to represent their countries with passion, and to tell our African story. They not only championed meaningful conversations on sustainability, education and entrepreneurship but connected with global leaders and engaged in insightful discussions. Their commitment to creating a better future demonstrates how they are truly a force for good, driving impactful change in their communities. The knowledge and experiences they’ve gained will undoubtedly fuel positive transformation as they carry the core values of empowerment forward. At the summit, we also led a discussion on financial inclusion through entrepreneurship, which afforded us the opportunity to showcase how Absa is leading societal driven interventions across our African markets through our people - our talent. #YourStoryMatters #ForceForGood #OWY2024

Absa’s Dr Steven Zwane recently hosted a panel discussion about the role of small business in an economy at the South Africa Investor Day in London. South Africa’s economic future hinges on SMEs' ability to drive industrialisation and local production while integrating into global value chains. SMEs account for a significant portion of GDP and are essential to meeting South Africa’s employment goals, especially in the context of the National Development Plan. By leveraging opportunities for cross-border trade and global partnerships, South Africa can increase its SME competitiveness, attracting foreign investment and expertise to strengthen its local economy.   The coming together of South African and UK policymakers, investors, financial institutions, and SME owners to explore innovative ways of enhancing SME growth is a crucial step forward. Small business is the lifeblood of economic growth in South Africa and Absa is ready to play its part.   We recognise HE Antony Phillipson, the British High Commissioner in South Africa, for his sponsorship and collaboration with Absa, in enabling the SMEs to take part in the investor week's activities.    Panelists included Minister of the Department of Small Business Development HE Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, Deputy Minister in the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, Andrew Whitfield, Deputy Minister, Department of Agriculture, Rosemary Capa and Group Chief Executive of Transformation and Sustainability at African Bank, Edna Montse. Contributions included eradication of red tape, ensuring that SMEs participate in policy development, encouraging participation of small businesses in industrialisation and reshaping the direction of Enterprise and Supplier Development towards access to finance and markets.   #AbsaSmallBusiness #AfricanExpertise #LondonInvestmentWeek #YourStoryMatters
