Beryl: Watches, warnings in effect for Texas, Houston area

HOUSTON - Beryl is moving across Texas as a tropical storm after knocking out power to millions and leaving at least four people dead in the greater Houston area.

Beryl became a Category 1 hurricane after moving through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday night and made landfall around 4 a.m. in Matagorda.

THE LATEST: Beryl continues to move through Texas

As it moved through Southeast Texas, the hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and gusts near 90 mph.

The tropical storm is steadily weakening and is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone on Tuesday.
