NYPD’s concerns on July 4th fireworks and post-event security
NEW YORK (PIX11) — The NYPD said it is as worried about the big fireworks show on the Hudson River as what happens afterward.
The Mayor and NYPD leadership gave an update on the policing plan for the Holiday Wednesday afternoon.
The NYPD said there is no specific credible threat to the July 4th celebrations– adding that pivoting the big fireworks show to the Hudson River is slightly easier than policing the East River.
Expect police that you can and cannot see on the roads, on the river and underground on Manhattan’s west side. Police warn getting around will be difficult and advise to take the subway.
However, the NYPD says the officers will only stay in Manhattan for so long. They will fan out into neighborhood hot spots, particularly across the Bronx and North Brooklyn, which have historically been areas of concern for illegal fireworks and shootings on July 4th into the early morning hours of the 5th.
Police in general expect to be busy on July 4th, with the hotdog eating contest on Coney Island, and several protest planned. They are asking the general public not to add to the concern by using illegal fireworks.
