UPDATE: Will Hurricane Beryl hit Louisiana? What you need to know as strong storm heads to Jamaica, Mexico, Texas
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Could Hurricane Beryl hit Louisiana next week? Here’s what we know about the current projection and when we’ll know more about the potential effects on Louisiana.
As of Wednesday morning, Hurricane Beryl is still a Category 4 storm. It has maximum sustained wind speeds of 145 miles per hour and its pressure is 954 mb. It’s moving west-northwest at 18 miles per hour through the Caribbean.
Jamaica will likely take a direct hit from Beryl this afternoon. Within the next few hours, devastating hurricane-force winds, a life-threatening storm surge and damaging waves will impact Jamaica. Beryl may weaken some as it interacts with land and moves into an environment where more wind shear is present. Beryl will continue moving west through the Caribbean, and it should reach the Yucatán Peninsula at the end of this week.
It is expected to weaken once it reaches the Yucatán Peninsula on Friday. Beryl may try to gain strength as it enters the Gulf over the weekend, but there may be enough wind shear to keep it at a Category 1 level or possibly just be a tropical storm as it continues moving west-northwest.
It should make landfall near the Texas and Mexico border late Sunday night or early Monday morning. There’s still some disagreement between models, but there seems to be a better consensus that Beryl will make landfall near the Texas and Mexico border.
With Beryl expected to turn more northward, higher surf and waves could impact the southern Louisiana coastline along with increased moisture in some of the outermost rainbands associated with the storm
If Beryl turns even more northward, then more significant impacts may occur in southern Louisiana early next week.
