Helene North Carolina Impacts: County-by-county
WANTING TO KNOW HOW IT WILL IMPACT US. WELL, IT’S GOING TO IMPACT DIFFERENT PARTS OF OUR AREA A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY. THE MOUNTAINS AND KEEP IN MIND, WE HAD QUITE A BIT OF RAINFALL ALREADY THIS WEEK, RIGHT? AND WE’VE GOT MORE COMING IN TODAY, ESPECIALLY IN OUR WESTERN COUNTIES. WE CALL THAT A BIT OF A PRIMER. THAT’S ALREADY CAUSING LOCAL WATERWAYS TO RUN HIGH. WITH THAT EXCESS OF RAINFALL THAT WE’VE HAD. AND THEN YOU PUT A TROPICAL SYSTEM ON TOP OF THAT. THIS IS NOT A GOOD SITUATION FOR ANYBODY. FARTHER EAST, WE’RE MORE WORRIED ABOUT SEVERE WEATHER AS OPPOSED TO HEAVY RAINFALL TOTALS AS AS WE ALL KNOW, WHEN TROPICAL SYSTEMS COME ONSHORE, THEY CAN CREATE SOME BANDS OF RAIN THAT INHERENTLY HAVE SOME ROTATION TO THEM. AND COULD CAUSE SOME BRIEF TORNADOES TO DEVELOP. THE LATEST ON HALLOWEEN NORTH MOVEMENT AT 12MPH. THIS HAS BEEN PICKING UP FORWARD SPEED PRETTY GRADUALLY. IT’S NOW MOVING THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. WILL GRADUALLY START TO TURN MORE NORTHEAST AND PICK UP SOME FORWARD SPEED. THIS IS GOING TO ACCELERATE VERY QUICKLY. IT IS STILL A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE WITH 85 MILE PER HOUR WINDS. BUT THIS IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE BEFORE IT MAKES LANDFALL. WE’RE STARTING TO SEE SOME INDICATIONS THAT A VERY CLEAR EYE IS TRYING TO DEVELOP. WE’LL SEE HOW THAT DEVELOPS. IT’S ALREADY BRINGING TORRENTIAL RAINS TO PORTIONS OF FLORIDA. MOST OF THIS IS OFFSHORE AT THE MOMENT. BUT AS THAT STORM GROWS CLOSER, YOU CAN BET THAT THESE HEAVY RAIN BANDS WILL START TO MOVE ON SHORE. I THINK THERE’S ONLY THREE COUNTIES IN FLORIDA THAT ARE NOT UNDER SOME SORT OF LIKE MAJOR ADVISORY OF SOME KIND, WHETHER IT BE FLOODING OR SEVERE WEATHER RISK OVER THE NEXT DAY OR SO. SO HERE’S THE LATEST TRACK EXPECTED TO ACCELERATE AND MOVE TOWARD THE COAST. THIS IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL SOMETIME THIS EVENING. NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER NOW FORECASTING THIS AS A CAT FOUR COMING ON SHORE. NOW KEEP IN MIND THE STRONGER THE WINDS ARE BEFORE THIS MAKES LANDFALL, THE STRONGER THE POTENTIAL WINDS ARE GOING TO BE AS IT BEGINS TO MOVE INTO OUR LOCAL AREA. NOW, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN FAIRLY RAPIDLY, COMING IN, YOU KNOW YOU’RE STILL TALKING 60 MILE AN HOUR WINDS AROUND THE CENTER. ONCE IT STARTS TO MOVE INTO NORTHERN GEORGIA AND THE UPSTATE, PORTIONS OF SOUTH CAROLINA. THIS IS ALSO EXPECTED TO HAVE A VERY WIDE WIND FIELD ASSOCIATED WITH THAT. SO TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO EXTEND HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM THE CENTER OF THE STORM. SO IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER WHERE THAT CONE IS OR WHERE THE CENTER OF THAT STORM IS GOING TO TRACK, IT’S STILL GOING TO HAVE SOME IMPACT ON OUR AREA. AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT OUR MODELS, YOU CAN SEE THE BIG BAND OF RAIN THAT IS ALREADY EXTENDED AHEAD OF A FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT UNFORTUNATELY HAPPENS TO BE PARKED JUST ON THE THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE MOUNTAINS THAT IS FOCUSING BANDS OF HEAVY RAIN CURRENTLY AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY, AND UNTIL A LINE PASSES FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS AND KEEPING THAT STEADY RAIN COMING, THE STORM IS EXPECTED TO GET TO ITS CLOSEST POINT SOMETIME EARLY TOMORROW MORNING AND SHOULD FIZZLE OUT SOMETIME DURING THE AFTERNOON TOMORROW, BUT WE MIGHT HAVE SHOWERS COME IN FOR A WHILE. FLOOD WATCH IS POSTED AND COULD SEE SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IN THE MOUNTAINS, AND PERHAPS SOME OF OUR FOOTHILLS COUNTIES. THAT’S IN PLACE UNTIL 8:00 FRIDAY. YOU CAN SEE LOCALLY IN OUR HOUR BY HOUR FORECAST. IT’S JUST RAINING STEADILY WITH SOME POCKETS OF HEAVY RAIN. TRY IT. RAIN. CHANCES ARE GOING TO BE RELATIVELY LOW TO START, BUT SHOULD START TO STEP UP LATER TODAY. WE’LL BE WATCHING FOR ANY POTENTIAL SPIN UPS OR ROTATING THUNDERSTORMS WITH ANY BANDS THAT COME THROUGH FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. RAIN TOTALS AND OUR BEST RAINS SHOULD COME IN TOMORROW. THIS IS ALSO GOING TO BE OUR BIGGEST TORNADO THREAT SOMETIME TOMORROW MORNING THROUGH MIDDAY OR EARLY AFTERNOON, AND THEN THAT SHOULD BEGIN TO TAPER OFF AFTER THAT. BUT WE’LL KEEP SOME LINGERING RAIN INTO THE AFTERNOON. WE’LL JUST HAVE TO WATCH AND SEE HOW THINGS BEGIN TO PLAY OUT. SO SEVERE WEATHER THREAT, A SLIGHT RISK, A LEVEL TWO RISK THAT WE COULD SEE SOME TORNADOES TOMORROW. AND I DO BELIEVE WE’LL HAVE SOME WARNINGS TOMORROW. SO MAKE SURE YOUR WEATHER RADIO IS CHARGED UP. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ALL THE PRECAUTIONS YOU NEED TO FO
