Special edition of the Scientific and Technical Review for WOAH’s centenary

Celebrating 100 years since the founding of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), this special edition of the Scientific and Technical Review delves into WOAH’s progress, ongoing challenges and its pivotal role in advancing the One Health approach, which emphasises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health.

With a century of achievements, including the landmark eradication of rinderpest in 2011, WOAH is well-equipped to carry on its vital work in a world where much remains to be done. Persistent threats like African swine fever, foot and mouth disease, peste des petits ruminants and zoonotic infections including rabies and avian influenza underscore the continued relevance of WOAH’s mission. Experts also discuss other pressing concerns in this issue such as antimicrobial resistance, the benefits of promoting animal welfare, wildlife conservation and the importance of aquatic animal health.

This edition addresses each topic in two articles: a ‘looking back, looking forward’ perspective alongside an in-depth scientific ‘state of the field’ analysis of current challenges and developments. Looking to the future, WOAH is poised to influence high-level decision-making in global animal health as it begins its second century, ready to adapt to an ever-evolving world.
