Save the clock tower: Mason courthouse gets a makeover
The courthouse was built in the early 1900′s
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - You may have noticed all the work being done at the historic Ingham County Courthouse on our Downtown Mason skycam.
News 10 took a look at the work being done as a piece of local history gets a much needed make over.
Janet Magsig and her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Magsig, were out in Mason on Friday, getting ready to have lunch right across the street from a historic landmark. “We’re happy to have the courthouse being restored.”
The Ingham County Courthouse Clock Tower has deteriorated due to age and water damage.
“In 1980, there was some wind damage so it’s kind of like we want to make sure we’re taking care of all the issues from this time.”
Facility Director Glenn Canning said four clock faces will be repaired and replaced. The repairs will be completed by the same vendor who has worked on the clocks for the last 20 years.
“The last time we had work done on the clock tower, it was 2008. It needs to be painted. We want to take care of the rust and prevent further damage inside the clock towers.”
The clock tower isn’t the only site getting a facelift. Heating and cooling systems and fire suppression units are also part of the renovations at the 120-year-old building.
“Close up any of the leaks,” said Canning.
“Fix the clock mechanism and actually the hands on the clock up there right now are wood and so we’re actually replacing them with aluminum handles.”
For Marilyn, the memories go beyond the clock tower.
“We all have history here. My marriage certificate came from there.”
She said “it’s a beautiful town, we support it. We love Mason. We’re here to have lunch and whatever they can do to make the building better, like she said, historically, that’s wonderful.”
“It’ll be nice when it’s all finished,” Janet said.
The clock tower is a $3 million bond project. It should be completed by October.
