Motivation
[edit]Tabular-data-type properties link to the tabular-data from Commons. But it does not provide any documentation on how those data are structured. Something better documented and standardized would be much more powerful. As a first step, we could use Wikidata property names in the field names, and mention those fields on Wikidata. As there is really no good place to properly document data on Commons, doing it on the related Wikidata content seems like the way to go.
Notified participants of WikiProject Tabular data, WikiProject Ontology has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.Zolo (talk) 16:29, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Support Interesting approach, yes this is something that has been missing. Would a qualifier like series ordinal (P1545) work for a preferred ordering, also? Other qualifiers might also be needed, for example units? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:53, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: P1545 would probably work ith this property, though it may be simpler to just sort the data directly on Commons. As for unit, it is a trick one: given that unit is part of the datavalue, not a quallifier, this property would not help. I don't really know how they should be documented on tabular data. Perhaps with a field called unit of measurement (Q47574) in the Commons file ? There is still plenty to be sorted out with tabular data, but it would be best be done on Wikidata talk:WikiProject Tabular data. --Zolo (talk) 21:34, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- Comment I think supported metadata (P8203) could fit here. --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 02:19, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Tinker Bell: not quite sure. It is not about metadata that are technically allowed by a a certain format, it is about how the data themselves are structured. --Zolo (talk) 13:21, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- Support and we really need a uniform way to name the fields in the tables for this property to be useful. --Stevenliuyi (talk) 03:29, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
