We’ve long known Timothée Chalamet is a chameleonic singer trapped in an actor’s body, but now the general public won’t think twice. He plays Bob Dylan in the James Mangold–directed music biopic A Complete Unknown, which charts the rise of the folk singer-songwriter and his controversial switch from acoustic to electric guitar. “A few weeks back, my friend Woody Guthrie and I, we met a young man; he dropped in on us out of nowhere and he played us a song,” Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) introduces Dylan to the stage. “In that moment, we got a feeling we were getting a glimpse of the future.” The new trailer doesn’t hit you over the head with plot points. Instead, it introduces you to Chalamet’s Dylan singing voice by way of an “A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall” performance to an unseen, rapt audience. Chalamet imitates Dylan’s gravelly voice with competence, likely making his online fan club swoon. As the song plays, we see girlfriend Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning), who eyes Dylan at a hootenanny and rides on the back of his motorcycle. Early Dylan champion and recording artist Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) also saw an opportunity to hook up with him and took it. Who can blame her?
