Every year, the Duchess of Cambridge delights royal-watchers with joyous new photographs of her three children, released on the eve of their respective birthdays. So far they’ve included shots of an adorable three-year-old Prince George feeding his beloved cocker spaniel Lupo; a four-year-old Princess Charlotte playing with daffodils; and their little brother, Louis, frolicking in the woods, making rainbow hand prints, and most recently, riding a snazzy red bike. Now, as Louis prepares to turn four on 23 April, his parents have shared new portraits to mark the milestone, taken in Norfolk earlier this month.

In one of the pictures, all of which were taken by keen photographer Kate, a beaming Louis is captured running along the sand on the beach in Norfolk, dressed in blue shorts, a check shirt, and a grey jumper with a star pattern. The Cambridges’ country retreat, Anmer Hall, is a stone’s throw from Norfolk’s sublime north coast, home to stunning beaches including Brancaster and Hunstanton. The Duchess of Cambridge, who has devoted much of her energy to promoting the importance of early years development in children in recent years, is passionate about outdoor play.
The other family member to have celebrated a birthday with a striking new portrait this month? The Queen, of course, who at 96, posed in the grounds of Windsor Castle in a forest-green coat (a shade similar to Prince Philip’s official livery colour) while holding the reins of two of her white fell ponies, Bybeck Katie and Bybeck Nightingale. It was reportedly a day of quiet reflection for the monarch, though a larger celebration is expected this June to coincide with her Platinum Jubilee.
