Pedicure season is finally here, as last weekend’s long overdue sunny spell signalled the arrival of summer. If you find yourself ordering the same pair of Birkenstocks every May bank holiday, then don’t let us get in the way of tradition, however if you can’t quite decide your summer 2024 mood then we can help to narrow down your search.
Sandals are naturally a key component of any spring/summer fashion show, and for 2024 the collections were awash with an abundance of feel-good styles, such as jelly shoes, rope sandals, flip flops and crochet fishermans.
At Chanel models sported simple black flip flops which were made more “fashion” with the double C logo, while the Miu Miu models dressed like seasonaires in baggy board shorts and sandals made of twisted, colourful yachting rope. This season’s crochet trend also extended to footwear, with woven sandals that will bring a slice of island style to any summer look. The Row, meanwhile, transformed rock pool-ready jelly shoes into the cult buy of the summer – the £860 Marta flats are almost sold out in all four colourways.
These shoe styles will undoubtedly look their best when buried in sand, however they will also look just as good with jeans and a white T-shirt in your local pub garden or friend’s back garden. However, if the Miu Miu rope shoes are a little too Below Deck for you, there are more polished trends in the mix, too. The new creative director at Chloé, Chemena Kamali, is currently masterminding a boho revival (with the help of OG Chloé Girl Sienna Miller) and in a genius PR move had the entire front row at the autumn/winter 2024 catwalk wearing cork wedge sandals. It was a clear visual, pitching Noughties relics as the shoe of the summer.
Ever since Hermès created the Oran flats back in 1997, it has had a reputation for crafting luxurious sandals that people will spend big money on, and for summer 2024 the house introduced beautiful Grecian flats in a rich, oxblood hue. Unsurprisingly, this has sparked a wider trend for red wine-hued sandals, that look excellent with a matching Malbec pedicure. If you are after something simple and minimalist, however, there are also lots of black leather thong sandals and flats with very thin, delicate straps that evoke Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s much-documented ’90s style.
