The Best Online Christian Counseling Services of 2024, Tried and Tested

Therapy options for Christians looking to include spirituality in their sessions

Spirituality and religion are a source of home and stability for many people—and their mental health benefits are well-documented. For those who find solace in spiritual practices, working with an online therapist who shares their beliefs can play an important role in mental and emotional wellness. “People request counselors or therapists who share aspects of their identity all the time, and this includes religion,“ says Amy Marschall, PsyD, clinical psychologist at Resiliency Mental Health. “A Christian person might feel more comfortable with a Christian counselor who understands their faith and how it applies in their life, just as someone of any other religion might prefer a counselor who shares their faith.”

The number of online therapy services has expanded immensely over the last few years, bringing convenience and affordability to therapy-seekers, including Christians interested in counseling. To determine the best online Christian therapy providers, we personally tested 80 top teletherapy companies and surveyed 100 users from each. We also sent detailed questionnaires to the companies themselves to gain further information and spoke to subject matter experts about the benefits of each company. Here are the companies that ranked the highest.

Data points analyzed
We surveyed 100 users from 55 online therapy companies and 27 therapist directories to understand their experiences with these services. Then, we tested the services ourselves across multiple states, conducted comprehensive data collection research, and evaluated our results with the help of a licensed therapist.

Disclaimer

Christian counseling may help many therapy seekers, but it may not be the right fit for everyone. Counselors are not required to hold state licensure in the United States if they are providing faith-based counseling—though most of the companies we reviewed only work with fully licensed providers.

Additionally, if you’re LGBTQIA+, consult a company’s statement of faith and/or code of ethics to see if its clinicians are LGBTQIA+ competent and affirming. Many faith-based platforms and practices only promote heterosexual marriage and traditional gender roles.

Online therapy is also not appropriate for those who are in crisis, suicidal, or living with serious mental illness.

Privacy

When choosing an online therapy provider, we recommend that you read the company’s privacy guidelines before you sign up to better understand whether it is HIPAA-compliant and whether it shares any private information with third parties. There have been some online therapy security and ethical concerns raised by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and several government officials about what user health information online therapy providers collect and what they do with any information they collect.

Why We Chose It

BetterHelp (formerly Faithful Counseling, which is now fully under BetterHelp) has a network of therapists who share Christian beliefs and can tailor therapy to your Christian faith, including therapists offering counseling from a biblical perspective. Our experience, and that of the users surveyed, reveals that BetterHelp offers great value and has quality clinicians who respond quickly and empathetically to patient needs.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Licensed therapists offer multiple modalities

  • Convenient communication options

  • Website is attractive and easy to navigate

  • It’s easy to switch therapists

Cons
  • Customer service suffers due to large size

  • Therapist is chosen for you

Faithful Counseling is Now BetterHelp

Faithful Counseling has always been a company under the BetterHelp umbrella, with both companies sharing the same therapists—and as of November 1, 2023, BetterHelp announced that it was sunsetting Faithful Counseling as a separate company.

BetterHelp still provides Christian-based therapy. We tested BetterHelp's Christian therapy services while they were still operated by Faithful Counseling.

Our Testing

We asked two people to try Faithful Counseling’s services in California and Kentucky to test its individual therapy prior to it being folded into BetterHelp; we also tested BetterHelp's individual therapy in New York, Missouri, Massachusetts, California, Kansas, and the U.K. (although these particular sessions were not faith-focused). We liked the option to combine quality therapeutic techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with theology, prayer, and meditation.

For those interested in Christian counseling, BetterHelp has a survey as part of the sign-up process that asks about your Christian denomination, the role of prayer in your life, and if you'd welcome biblical wisdom and prayer in sessions or would prefer to keep them clinical. Knowing our therapists were aligned with our most deeply held beliefs put us at ease throughout the therapy process. Our therapists went beyond the canned responses so many online therapy platforms are known for. Rather, they were thoughtful and empathetic whether they were responding in live sessions or over messaging.

"I was very impressed by my provider's clinical knowledge as well as her biblical wisdom. From our first conversation, it was clear to me that her faith was a governing pillar, and effortlessly incorporated into her practice."

—BetterHelp's Christian counseling tester, a mom who wanted her faith incorporated into her sessions

We loved that most therapists made time for us on their schedule even if they didn’t have slots initially open for us—it gave us the sense that they truly cared. However, in one instance a therapist didn't show up for a session and was unresponsive to our messages. We were able to quickly switch therapists and found the next therapist was communicative and considerate.

Plans & Pricing
  • Insurance Accepted: No
  • Subscription Required: Yes, one monthly subscription plan with weekly rates subject to surge pricing
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: Varies by demand and location; typically costs about $70 to $100 per week, for a total of $280 to $400 monthly
What Users Say

We surveyed 100 users of BetterHelp's Christian counseling services (formerly Faithful Counseling):

  • 93% rated BetterHelp's Christian counseling as very good or excellent overall
  • 89% rated their therapist’s qualifications as very good or excellent
  • 93% said that most or all of their needs were met at BetterHelp's Christian counseling
  • 96% are likely or very likely to recommend BetterHelp's Christian counseling to a friend or someone like them

Best for Couples : ReGain

  • Price: $260-$360+ per month
  • Is Insurance Accepted?: No
  • Type Of Therapy: Couples Therapy, Individual Therapy
Why We Chose it

ReGain, which is a therapy platform completely dedicated to relationships, offers Christian counselors. We appreciate that Christian couples can get faith-based support that caters to the unique needs of their relationships. The platform is easy to use and subscription plans are flexible, so you can commit at the level that’s right for you.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • You can choose a Christian therapist

  • Focus is on couples therapy

  • Therapists are responsive over messaging

  • Convenient text and live session model

  • Can message therapists directly

  • Easy to switch therapists

Cons
  • Not a fully Christian platform

  • Does not accept insurance

  • Short session times

Our Testing

We had six people test ReGain’s services for couples and individual relationship counseling in California, New York, Ohio, South Dakota, and the U.K. We found it to be a good option for couples therapy: Therapists were professional and experienced, gave us tools to use between sessions to improve communication, and were responsive to our needs, even when we messaged them between sessions.

While we did not test ReGain for faith-based counseling, we noted that you could request a Christian counselor during sign-up. Considering the unique needs of Christian couples, we found this to be very reassuring. We loved how responsive our therapists were and how willing they were to accommodate session times that worked best for us—even if it was out of their typical schedules. Often, we’d get responses to our messages within 24 hours. Our therapists also used a variety of therapeutic techniques and modalities proven to help couples, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT)

However, in one instance we didn't have a strong level of comfort with a therapist who seemed to make assumptions and project biases. We also didn’t appreciate the short session times. Couples issues are complicated, and with two people wanting to be heard, 30 to 45 minutes isn’t always enough. Bringing up tough issues without enough time for each partner to be heard meant that sometimes therapy actually led to more fights once a mediator wasn’t present. To make the most out of ReGain, you might need to find a therapist with availability to see you a few times per week to truly get all of your needs met.

Plans & Pricing
  • Insurance Accepted: No
  • Subscription Required: Yes
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: $65 to $90 per week, billed on a monthly basis, so $260 to $360 or more per month, depending on location, preferences, and availability. This gets you one session per week, plus messaging in between sessions.
What Users Say

We surveyed 100 users of ReGain:

  • 87% rated ReGain as very good or excellent overall
  • 93% rated their therapist’s qualifications as very good or excellent
  • 98% said that most or all of their needs were met at ReGain
  • 98% are likely or very likely to recommend ReGain to a friend or someone like them
  • 63% identified as Christian

Best With Coaching Option : Grace Wellness Center

  • Price: $80-$125 per hour-long session
  • Is Insurance Accepted?: Yes
  • Type Of Therapy: Couples Therapy, Individual Therapy
Why We Chose It

Grace Wellness Center offers therapy, coaching, and counseling, including pastoral (spirituality-based) counseling, either virtually or in person. We’re impressed with its holistic approach to well-being: Users can take advantage of coaching to improve their physical health, seek out a pastor for spiritual guidance, and get therapy for issues like stress and marriage issues, all in one place.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Fully Christian platform

  • Offers therapy plus counseling, including pastoral counseling

  • Therapists treat issues like trauma, marriage issues, and stress

  • Treatment available for individuals of all ages, couples, and families

  • Discounts for those who qualify

  • Can choose your own therapist

  • Virtual or in-person sessions

Cons
  • Small number of therapists to choose from

  • No worksheets or supplemental resources given

  • In-person options only available in Pennsylvania

Our Testing

We have not yet had the opportunity to test Grace Wellness Center; however, we felt it was important to include it because it’s a fully Christian platform that offers both counseling and coaching, including pastoral (spirituality-based) counseling. It’s unique in its ability to offer faith-based mental health support for couples and individuals struggling with everything from stress to trauma to sexual addiction. Plus, it takes a thoroughly biblically-based approach.

We love that it has a holistic perspective on well-being. Not only can you opt for traditional therapy, but you can also see a coach to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle in body, mind, and soul, all of which will support your mental health. It's great that you can see a pastor too—getting multiple needs met in one platform can save time and make your life easier.

A downside is that in-person counseling and coaching is only available in Pennsylvania. That said, because it began as a traditional in-office private practice counseling center, it continues that structure through its online counseling session options. It offers pay-as-you-go sessions only, with in-office, video, and phone sessions available. Such a payment structure is good for those who don’t want to commit to multiple sessions or a subscription bundle. Grace Wellness is a small company, with only 25 employees, which may make it easier to get help should any issues or questions arise.

Plans & Pricing
  • Insurance Accepted: Yes
  • Subscription Required: No
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: Pay as you go at a rate of $80 to $125 per hour-long session
What Users Say

We surveyed 100 users of Grace Wellness Center:

  • 80% rated Grace Wellness Center as very good or excellent overall
  • 88% rated their therapist’s qualifications as very good or excellent
  • 83% rated the communication options as very good or excellent
  • 98% said that most or all of their needs were met at Grace Wellness Center
  • 95% of users were satisfied or very satisfied with the therapist options

Best for Resources : Christian Therapist On Demand

  • Price: $25-$320 a month
  • Is Insurance Accepted?: No
  • Type Of Therapy: Couples Therapy, Group Therapy, Individual Therapy
Why We Chose It

Christian Therapist on Demand is a fully faith-based platform that is working to destigmatize therapy in the Christian community. We appreciate that its therapists can treat a range of mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorders, and addiction. Plus, it has a large selection of additional resources like calming music, educational podcasts, and worksheets.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Offers music, podcasts, education, and other tools

  • Is a fully Christian platform

  • Is helping destigmatize therapy among Christians

  • Multiple subscription options

  • Therapists treat a range of issues

  • Resource library available

Cons
  • No Statement of Faith could deter some users

  • No therapist bios

  • Insurance not accepted

Our Testing

We didn’t have the opportunity to test Christian Therapist On Demand, but we felt it was important to include because of the extensive resources it provides beyond therapy, such as music, podcasts, worksheets, videos, and mental health guides. Providing such resources encourages self-responsibility and education, so therapy-goers can take charge of their mental health beyond sessions. We also love its goal—it was created in 2016 to destigmatize therapy in the Christian community. Its tagline, “You can have Jesus and a therapist too,” helps achieve that goal.

It's great that it offers support for common but challenging conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), personality disorders, addiction, and anxiety. We like that both couples and individuals can get therapy and that groups are also available. You can also request a prayer and send a message detailing what it is for, which is a nice touch.

We weren’t sure what to make of the fact that there isn’t a Statement of Faith on the website. Some users might feel put off by the fact that their therapist isn’t agreeing to transparent standards, while others might be grateful that the platform’s approach is more flexible. We didn’t appreciate that some of the web pages for tools weren’t thorough compared to others. It would be great to see this platform have a more uniform, streamlined approach to sharing resources on its site.

Plans & Pricing
  • Insurance Accepted: No
  • Subscription Required: Yes
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: The mind health wellness membership plan is $25 per month, plus access to pay-as-you-go sessions for $65 each, and one therapist-led group; the unlimited messaging plus plan is $260 per month for one monthly session with a licensed therapist, access to three groups, and messaging (text, audio, video); the ultimate unlimited messaging plan is $320 per month and includes four video visits per month; the couples coaching plan costs $380 per month and includes four weekly sessions, unlimited messaging (text, audio, video), and access to live groups.
What Users Say

We surveyed 100 users of Christian Therapist on Demand:

  • 75% rated Christian Therapist on Demand positively overall
  • 93% were satisfied or very satisfied Christian Therapist on Demand's services
  • 84% said it was likely they'd be seeing the same therapist a year from now
  • 92% of users would recommend Christian Therapist on Demand to a friend

Best Free Website : Chatnow

  • Price: Free
  • Is Insurance Accepted?: N/A
Why We Chose It

Chatnow is a free service that offers 24/7 support from Christian peers. Users can connect to peers quickly by simply entering their name and the issue they’re facing. Chatnow can help reduce feelings of isolation and despair in those for whom therapy simply isn’t accessible.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Peer support from fellow Christians

  • Support for issues like debt, addiction, stress, and trauma

  • Available 24/7

  • Free service

  • Has an app providing biblical guidance

Cons
  • Does not provide therapy

  • Peers do not have any training in peer support

  • Only messaging, no phone or video chat services

Our Testing

We didn’t have the opportunity to test Chatnow, but we wanted to include it because it helps fill the gap in mental health coverage for those who are under-resourced and need spiritually aligned support. Chatnow is an online chat hotline that connects users to a “Christian who cares.” So, while it doesn’t offer professional mental health services, it allows you to talk to a Christian volunteer about any issues you may be experiencing—for free.

You can connect to someone quickly 24/7: Enter your name and the issue you want to talk about and begin chatting with someone right away. Topics you might discuss include debt, substance use, gambling, pornography addiction, sexual assault recovery, chronic worry, and loneliness. While you should get treatment from a qualified mental health counselor whenever possible for these issues, having an empathetic ear can be a lifesaver if you can’t afford therapy or you just want extra support.

It’s great that Chatnow also offers a newsletter and articles about topics ranging from guilt to connecting with God. Chatnow also has an app called MeetJ,  which is available from Google Play or the Apple App Store. It takes you through the Book of Mark and provides daily readings. While we wouldn’t recommend Chatnow as a stand-alone option for mental health issues, we acknowledge that not everyone can afford therapy. Talking it out in a safe space can help ease the loneliness and isolation that many therapy-seekers struggle with.

Plans & Pricing
  • Insurance Accepted: N/A
  • Subscription Required: N/A
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: Chatnow is a free website, so you won’t need to worry about costs or plans.
What Users Say

We did not survey users of Chatnow, but we recognize that peer support can be crucial. “For those unable to access traditional therapy or who would benefit from the empathy of a person who has been in their shoes and faced the same challenges, peer support can be invaluable,” says Hannah Owens, LMSW, a subject matter expert. “Peer support can be bolstering by letting you know that you are not alone.”

Best Directory : GoodTherapy

Why We Chose It

GoodTherapy is an online directory listing therapists across the country, both in-person and online. It's easy to search for a Christian therapist or psychiatrist, and you can even search for pastoral counselors.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Has Christian clinicians who treat a variety of issues

  • Large directory with a lot of options

  • You can filter for individual, couples, families, and group therapy

  • In-person and online providers available

  • Has in-depth provider bios

Cons
  • No filter for religion

  • Not a fully Christian platform

  • Costs not displayed for all therapists

Our Testing

GoodTherapy is an excellent, large directory with a variety of therapists, including Christian therapists, which is why it stood out to us. We had a great experience when testing GoodTherapy—we found that it was easy to use and quickly connected us with a therapist with whom we rapidly developed a good rapport. We appreciated that we could find in-person and online clinicians who treat a range of issues, including ADHD, addiction, anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma.

We liked that we could search for Christian therapists specifically. After filtering for location, we could search using the term “Pastoral Counseling” and get a list of clinicians. We were impressed with the fact that we could specifically search for therapists who offered free consultations and sliding scale fees, since therapeutic rapport and cost are two of the most important aspects of finding the right therapist. We also liked how thorough the therapist bios are. You get plenty of information about each person's specialties and expertise, plus a more personal introduction that gives you a feel for who they are.

However, we found that the search function can sometimes be iffy. Results from searches can vary, and it's not always clear how a clinician relates to the search function used. That said, for the most part, we found the process of looking for a therapist to be easy.

Plans & Pricing
  • Insurance Accepted: Varies by provider
  • Subscription Required: N/A
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: GoodTherapy is free to use. It is a directory that connects you with therapists, who each set their own rates and policies.
What Users Say

We surveyed 100 users of GoodTherapy:

  • 84% rated GoodTherapy as very good or excellent overall
  • 86% rated their therapist’s qualifications as very good or excellent
  • 95% said that most or all of their needs were met at GoodTherapy
  • 97% are likely or very likely to recommend GoodTherapy to a friend or someone like them
  • 63% identified as Christian

Other Companies We Considered

We considered Cornerstone Christian Counseling and MyCounselor.Online for this review but did not recommend them because they follow strict codes of ethics that are not friendly to the LGBTQ+ community and could prove detrimental for LGBTQIA+ therapy seekers.

Guide to Choosing the Best Online Therapy for Christians

  • Specialties: Look for a therapist or service that specializes in your area of concern, such as anxiety, depression, or stress management. Make sure you feel comfortable with your therapist and can share honestly, including about your relationship with your faith.
  • Cost: Decide how much you are able to spend per month for counseling services so you don’t have to end therapy early due to financial strain. If cost is a concern, look for an online therapy provider that accepts insurance, health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) payments, or employee assistance programs, or offers sliding-scale fees or financial aid.
  • Scheduling: Find a service or therapist who can meet with you when your schedule allows. Many therapists offer evening and weekend appointments while some services offer 24/7 unlimited messaging.
  • Location: Make sure a therapist or company can offer services where you currently are located. A therapist must be licensed in your state.
  • Ease of switching: See if a service offers a free consultation, a trial period, or the ability to easily change therapists to make sure you find the right fit.

Who Is Online Christian Counseling Right For?

Online Christian counseling may be a good option if there are scheduling, distance, work, or transportation barriers that make in-person sessions difficult. It also may be a good fit if you and/or your partner prefer multiple communication styles such as messaging, journaling, worksheets, and audio chats along with live video sessions. Ensure you have a good internet connection and speed to avoid dropped calls or connection interruptions. It also is important to make sure you have privacy for your sessions.

If you’re doubting whether therapy would be beneficial because you already receive pastoral counseling, consider that while both are beneficial, only therapy is designed to treat mental health conditions with evidence-based approaches. “Some individuals benefit from religious counseling, but it can be harmful to try to replace therapy with it,” says Dr. Marschall. “Unfortunately, some churches push for religious counseling rather than secular therapy, which can prevent people from getting help for their mental health concerns. Christian counseling/therapy with a qualified provider can offer faith-based support along with evidence-based mental health treatment.”

Keep in mind that online therapy is not an emergency service and is not good for people with psychosis or suicidal ideation. Christian counseling services specifically might not be appropriate for or supportive of those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How Much Does Online Therapy for Christians Cost?

In general, Christian online therapy costs less than in-person, private-practice therapy. However, not all online therapy companies operate on the same business model.

Some online therapy companies use a subscription model, which means you pay a set amount per month for a set number of services, such as messaging a therapist or having a video therapy session. Other online therapy companies operate on a more traditional, pay-per-session model. Pay-per-session online therapy usually is more expensive than subscription-based online therapy, though still lower than the cost of in-person therapy. Pay-per-session Christian therapy prices can range from $55 per session to $195 or more per session.

  • What Does Online Therapy for Christians Cover?

Because Christian therapists are still therapists, they have to go through the same licensure and education requirements as secular therapists. Therefore, Christian therapy can cover the same topics that other therapists can cover, depending on what issues and specializations the individual therapist is specifically trained in.

The only difference is the Christian therapist may be more comfortable with integrating spiritual practices such as prayer and scripture references. People have different preferences, so it is important to be aware of what is helpful for you and communicate that to your therapist.

  • What Is the Difference Between Christian Counseling and Biblical Counseling?

Christian counselors incorporate some of the same approaches that secular providers would in their counseling, such as psychodynamic and behavioral modalities that are common in therapy. Biblical counselors, in contrast, base their counseling only on what can be found written in the Christian Bible. Christian counselors can be licensed mental health professionals; biblical counseling does not require a license or certification.

  • Are There Christian Counseling Resources for Married Couples?

There are a variety of Christian marriage counseling options and techniques.

I Believe's "25 Best Christian Marriage Resources to Help Your Marriage Thrive" is a list of resources including book recommendations, blogs, podcasts, and workbooks to actively engage you in Christian marriage support.

  • Where Can I Find Free Christian Counseling?

Unfortunately, there are few reputable options for free Christian counseling online. We have included Chatnow, which is a free Christian peer support service, but it does not employ licensed mental health providers. There are some ways to save money on therapy, and your church or community may well have counselors who will meet with you for free and may accommodate your need to meet virtually.

How We Tested and Reviewed Online Therapy Services

For this article, we examined Christian-focused online therapy resources and evaluated them by services offered, mission statement (including their position on LGTBQIA+ issues), and cost. We specifically highlighted resources that provided Christian mental health counseling as opposed to biblical counseling, which does not require the provider to be a licensed mental health practitioner.

We sent questionnaires to 55 companies and surveyed 100 current users of each platform. We also reviewed 27 different online therapist directories by surveying 100 users of the service, interviewed therapists listed on the directory, and reached out to each company to answer questionnaires. We also looked at some additional Christian counseling-focused companies as well. This gave us a wealth of qualitative and quantitative data about the user experience at each company.

Each company was evaluated based on the sign-up process, therapist qualifications, user experience, variety of therapy types offered, session length, subscription options, average cost, value for money spent, and the average percent of users willing to recommend the company to a friend.
