Thursday's forecast: Rain for Gulf Coast, Southeast

While most of the nation enjoys a relatively tranquil mid-January day, a storm system will deliver rain and showers to the Gulf Coast and Southeast.

Gulf Coast, Southeast: Rain and clouds will bring a cool, raw Thursday from Texas to the Florida Panhandle with temperatures only in the 50s. Some of the heaviest rain will be in Louisiana, including the New Orleans area.

Northwest: Rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains will dampen the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West on Thursday.

Northern tier: The chill will continue from the northern Plains to New England as highs only reach the teens and 20s. Snow showers in the Upper Midwest and coastal New England will add to the wintry feel.

Weather history for Jan. 15: In 1932, 2 inches of snow fell in downtown Los Angeles, the city's largest snowfall on record. In 1993, there was 47 inches of snow on the ground in Fairbanks, Alaska, the greatest snow cover ever.
