What is Sleeping Beauty about?
This animated 1959 treasure boasts some of the most starkly beautiful images ever put to film. However, because of its lukewarm reception, both critically and at the box office, it was the last fairy-tale adaptation from Disney for 30 years—until 1989’s The Little Mermaid.
Betrothed to Prince Phillip, heir to a neighboring kingdom, Princess Aurora is blessed by the fairies Flora and Fauna, given the gifts of beauty and song. But the wicked fairy Maleficent bestows something else on the princess: a deadly curse meant to kill Aurora upon her sixteenth birthday.
The good fairies—Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather—do their best to heal the curse, but it’s not quite enough. When Aurora turns sixteen, she falls into a deep and perpetual sleep that can only be broken by true love’s kiss.
When Prince Phillip sets out to find and save her, sword and shield at the ready, Maleficent transforms into a monstrous dragon with breath of fire.
