Horse Racing Picks: Blue Grass Stakes and Wood Memorial
The road to the Kentucky Derby moves to Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky. for Saturday's race for three-year-old thoroughbreds at the Blue Grass Stakes. The race is 1 1/8 miles.
We also have the Wood Memorial Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-olds which takes place at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, N.Y. From 1930 to 2000, 11 winners of the Wood Memorial went on to win the Kentucky Derby, including Secretariat in 1973 and Seattle Slew in 1977.
Blue Grass Stakes Favorites
Win Win Win (7/2), ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. and trained by Michael J. Trombetta, Signalman (5/1), ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. and trained by Ken McPeek, and Vekoma (9/5), with Javier Castellano aboard while being trained by George Weaver, are among the favorites to win Saturday's Blue Grass Stakes.
Signalman trotted to a victory at the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs on Nov. 24 at a 1 1/16-mile distance. Neither Win Win Win nor Vekoma have managed a victory during the Derby Prep schedule. Somelikeithotbrown (10/1) won in the Jeff Ruby Stakes at Turfway on March 9, and, pardon the pun, is a dark horse. Watch So Alive (15/1), too. He was ridden by Luis Saez, who was aboard Maximum Security, the Florida Derby winner last week. So Alive is a Todd Pletcher-trained horse.
Blue Grass Stakes Pick Winner
The top three favorites didn't come through in the Florida Derby last week, and we have another strong field in the Blue Grass. Look for Signalman to grab the win.
Blue Grass Stakes Exacta Pick
If you plan on an Exacta, which is betting the first two horses in correct order for those unfamiliar with wagering on the ponies, go with Signalman and Vekoma, or an exacta of 3-2.
You can also do an Exacta Box, which means you can win if the 3-2 or 2-3 come in first and second in either combination, although that pays slightly less than picking the first two horses straight-up.
Blue Grass Stakes Trifecta Pick
The trifecta of Signalman, Vekoma and Somelikeithotbrown looks like the way to go, or 3-2-1.

Wood Memorial Favorites
Tacitus (5/2), ridden by Jose L. Ortiz and trained by Bill Mott and Haikal (7/2), ridden by Rajiv Maragh and trained by Kiaran P. McLaughlin and the top favorites to win Saturday's Wood Memorial.
Tacitus won the Tampa Bay Derby March 9, while Haikal was winning on the same day in the Gotham Stakes on this same track. Don't sleep on Hoffa's Union (6/1) or Outshine (6/1), two with skinny odds. Tax (9/2) is another horse being overlooked, and what a great name this time of year! Tax won the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct Feb. 2, and he hopes this one turns out like the movie Groundhog Day.
Wood Memorial Pick Winner
Tacitus might be the class of the field, but I like Haikal to come through for the victory.
Wood Memorial Exacta Pick
Take Haikal to edge Tacitus in a very chalky exacta, the 4-2 exacta or 4-2/2-4 exacta box.
Wood Memorial Trifecta Pick
The trio of Haikal, Tacitus and Tax, 4-2-1 is the tri pick.
