Adrian bests Lochte in 100 free at Santa Clara Grand Prix

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — American record-holder Nathan Adrian has hidden his three Olympic gold medals, a silver and all his other hardware in his closet. For him, it's all about improving. He figures he'll have plenty of time to enjoy them when he retires.

Adrian set a meet record in the 100-meter freestyle at the Santa Clara Grand Prix on Friday night. He won the event in 48.08, fourth-fastest in the world so far, and thinks he could have gone faster.

"This is no time to hang up my medals and put them in a display case," Adrian said. "I only bring them out when I make an appearance. I'm all about self-improvement. The No. 1 thing of importance for me was to execute my plan. I was a little sloppy at certain points and I can work on those components over the next few weeks."

Adrian, like most swimmers, has an eye on the national championships and world trials June 25-29 in Indianapolis.

"I want to try and win in the world championship and get back on the podium in 2016," Adrian said. "It's crazy that there are only three more years. That's mind-boggling to me."

Olympic star Ryan Lochte finished second to Adrian, and came back to win the 100 butterfly in 52.29.

"I wish I would have been more focused in my workouts this year instead of being so sporadic," said Lochte, an 11-time Olympic medalist. "I have been really keyed in the last four weeks. It's been the best four weeks yet. I'm still nowhere near being ready for the world trials."

Kevin Cordes won the 400 breaststroke in 2:10.95, the seventh-best time in the world this year.

"Having a competitive field made it easy to get excited," Cordes said. "It looked like we were all moving pretty fast. It's a good sign that training is paying off."

Connor Jaeger won the 400 freestyle in 3:46.93 after taking the 800 freestyle Thursday.

Megan Romano upset a packed field in the women's 100 freestyle, winning in 54.16, just ahead of Olympic gold medalists Natalie Coughlin and Missy Franklin.

"I've raced against them a lot so I was kind of used to it," Romano said. "Having Natalie next to me was helpful. I wanted to go out fast and I knew she would go out fast."

An NCAA champion in the 200 freestyle, Romano owns the American record in the event. She helped Georgia win the NCAA title this year, including a record-breaking performance in the 400 freestyle relay.

"This definitely gives me a lot of confidence," Romano said. "There are a lot of good freestylers and to be able to compete with them is awesome."

Laura Sogar won the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.53, Gillian Ryan swam 4:11.83 to take the 400 freestyle. Katherine Savard won the 100 butterfly in 58.83, edging world record-holder Dana Vollmer, who finished in 58.90.
