Jets talk to Bill Polian about general manager job

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Before the New York Jets hired a search firm to look for a new general manager, the team spoke to former Indianapolis Colts executive Bill Polian, according to a person briefed on the talks between Polian and the organization.

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity, said Polian expressed to the team he wasn't interested in taking the job.

Polian, currently an analyst for ESPN, would neither confirm nor deny he spoke to the Jets about the job when contacted Sunday evening.

"People call almost every day. Coaches. Players. Executives," Polian told USA TODAY Sports by phone. "There's lots of conversations. I'm not going to characterize any conversations with anybody."

A Jets spokesman did not comment when asked if the team had made a run at Polian.

Polian was fired by Indianapolis after last season, as was his son Chris, who held the title of general manager. Bill Polian also served as general manager of the Carolina Panthers (1994-97) and Buffalo Bills (1986-93).

There have been reports the elder Polian, 70, could be a candidate to join the Kansas City Chiefs if general manager Scott Pioli is fired.

"As I've told everybody who has asked over the course of the season, that the answer is, 'Could I do it? Yeah.' Would I? That depends entirely on the family and other considerations," Polian said, though he did not discuss specifics.

"So right now, it doesn't look like there is anything in the offing. And I'm fine with that. I'm very happy with what I'm doing now. … "I'm really enjoying it much more than I thought it would. It's been interesting and a lot of fun."
