Tuesday's MLB trade deadline rumors, tracker

USA TODAY Sports

With Major League Baseball's trade deadline less jut hours away – Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET – rumors may soon give way to reality.

The New York Mets pulled off the first major deal Sunday evening in this slow-moving deadline by acquiring Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays.

General manager Brodie Van Wagenen continued to be active by trading starting pitcher Jason Vargas to the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Will Noah Syndergaard or Zack Wheeler follow?

After winning 19 of their last 24 games, will the San Francisco Giants hold onto ace Madison Bumgarner and closer Will Smith?

Who is the biggest name who will be traded before the deadline?

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

Here are the latest rumblings as the deadline nears:

Reds get: RHP Trevor Bauer (from Indians)

Indians get: OF Yasiel Puig (from Reds), OF Franmil Reyes and LHP Logan Allen (from Padres)

Padres get: OF Taylor Trammell (from Reds)

The skinny: Whoa! Didn't see that one coming.

The skinny: Martin, 33, had a 3.08 ERA in 38 games with the Rangers. It's a nice move for the Braves, who really needed (and still need) to bolster their bullpen. Still, Allard, a lefty, is just 21 and was a highly-regarded prospect as recently as last year. That might have been a steep price to pay.

The skinny: The Mets have a history of being unable to figure out what to do logistically with players who are on their way out the door, but you'd have to imagine that nothing is imminent.

The skinny: Ray is under team control through 2020 and these are all teams that could use a multi-year boost in the rotation. Chafin, 29, is holding left-handed hitters to a .231 average this season.

The skinny: With Noah Syndergaard starting Tuesday night for the Mets, there was immediate speculation that he would be/had been traded when Santana was scratched from his Class AAA start. Instead, it seems like the Mets are just playing it safe by having the veteran rested in case they do deal Syndergaard and/or Wheeler.

The skinny: The Mets are trying to get creative, but other teams are going to balk at this, particularly considering the Mets themselves only had to part with two minor-leaguers to get Stroman.

The skinny: The Cubs added reinforcement to their bullpen, acquiring right-handed reliever David Phelps from the Blue Jays for minor league pitcher Thomas Hatch. Phelps, a year removed from Tommy John elbow surgery, has a 3.63 ERA over 17.1 innings this season.

The skinny: The Astros aren't the only team who "engaged" in talks with the Giants about Madison Bumgarner's availability, but just imagine a Verlander, Cole, MadBum rotation. However, since going 19-5, MadBum may not be going anywhere

The skinny: Is this a sign of something to come? Syndergaard, who is still scheduled to pitch tonight, has been linked to several teams like the Padres, Astros and Yankees. Syndergaard, with a 4.33 ERA, is a valuable front line starting pitcher, but the asking price for the right-hander has been high.

The skinny: The Mariners have been trying to trade right-hander Mike Leake for the past two months without any luck. Leake, who is scheduled to start Tuesday night, is 9-8 with a 4.25 ERA. He has been solid in his last two starts, but comes with a hefty price tag -- he's due $15 million in 2020 with an option.

The skinny: The Red Sox, Padres and Rays have shown interest in Edwin Diaz. The Mets paid a hefty price for the closer in the offseason and despite his 4.95 ERA, he still remains a valuable reliever.

The skinny: Now this would be an intriguing swap, but one that likely won't happen. The last-place Pirates have not openly offered Felipe Vazquez, a first-time All-Star. The left-handed reliever, with 21 saves and a 1.87 ERA, is under control until 2024 and would demand a high price in return. The Dodgers are in need of a late inning reliever, but at what price? The Dodgers would prefer not to give up Lux, a middle infielder. But for fun, would Kenley Jansen, who has been inconsistent this season, hand the ball over to Vazquez in the ninth inning?

The skinny: Boyd, Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard. They're no Verlander of 2017, but all would be solid additions.

The skinny: The Astros are led by the best 1-2 punch in the AL in Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. But even with the best record in the AL, the Astros don't appear to be sitting idle at the deadline, they are looking to add starter to the rotation.

The skinny: Robbie Ray would be a nice addition to any rotation. The lefty, 9-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 23 starts, is an elite strikeout pitcher -- ranking fifth in the majors with 12.07 strikeouts per nine innings.
