What are you doing for Sword Swallower's Day?

USATODAY

Put on your party pants, because tomorrow is worth celebrating: It's the sixth annual World Sword Swallower's Day.

World Sword Swallower's Day takes place Saturday.

The day is co-sponsored by Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, which has scheduled about 20 special sword-swallowing events in cities all over the world. (Says Ripley's: "In excess of 125 feet of solid steel is set to go down the hatch — hopefully without a scratch!")

I have an odd obsession with sword swallowing, so this is right up my alley. Here's hoping some of my favorite swallowers are participating, like Lady Aye, Betty Bloomerz and Heather Holliday.

The cities with special events include New York, Baltimore, San Francisco, Orlando, Hollywood and Gatlinburg, Tenn. Check out the Ripley's website for the full list.

"Sword swallowers were a big part of the very first Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditorium at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933," a rep for Ripley Entertainment says. "There, three performers, two of whom were women, mesmerized the huge crowds. Ripley's has been home to sword swallowers around the world ever since."

If you've always wanted to try hoisting a sword down your throat, you can do it virtually via the Ripley's app.

All cities will take part in an "official swallow" at 2:23 p.m. I'm guessing precautions have been taken, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have paramedics on hand in each city, just in case ...
