Will consumers answer Apple Watch's call? #tellusatoday

USA TODAY
The Watch Sport is one of three versions of Apple's new wearable technology.

Apple announced Monday that it will launch Apple Watch on April 24, with pre-orders starting April 10. We asked our followers what they thought about Apple Watch and other wearable technology.

Apple is behind the times. The smartwatch already exists as Samsung Gear. But it is a convenient tool.

Apple is always about the experience. Bold and different!

What's next? The iEarring? The iBandage? Why must we always be connected?

As long as people are not distracted when driving, the more technology, the better. There will be a market for these devices.

I am thinking of investing in a Samsung Gear 2 for running and tracking purposes. Otherwise, I am being careful about too much tech use.

There is no market for Apple Watch. It's a gimmick device.

—@lautenschlager6

The Apple Watch is more technology fueling consumerism. But there is nothing wrong with wanting something.

The device is nice and novel, and I'm sure it will sell well. However, words and details in maps and photos are hard to read on smartphones. With the smaller screen of the Apple Watch, I can't see these devices replacing smartphones or laptops. I think their real calling (pun intended) will be Dick Tracy-style wrist communication along with body-function monitoring.

If you own an iPhone, this watch is clearly a go-to option. It may be expensive compared with others, but most of them do not look nice enough to wear at formal or even business casual events. The Apple Watch does.

I'm a fan of Apple products, but CEO Tim Cook and his team have done a poor job answering the all important question: Why would anyone want one of these, especially for $350?

I don't think exercising with it is a good reason to buy one. The phone you have with you anyway will perform the same tasks as the smartwatch. When I exercise, I have my iPhone on my forearm. It's easy to use the music controls and the maps this way, and it's comfortable. Of course, I'd rather just wear a watch, but adding an Apple Watch to the arsenal just wouldn't do anything for me yet.

All in all, I'm really disappointed in this first attempt. I'll either go for an Android version that requires no companion phone or wait for the Apple Watch 2.

Meanwhile, of course, I'll quietly laugh at those who paid way too much for something that adds so little.

Apple has never been focused on being the first to market. It is more concerned with doing it right than being first.

The hardware might last for years, but software updates quickly make the hardware obsolete, if not unusable. While these devices don't interest me, there is a sound reason for buying new hardware fairly often if you do like this technology.
