Ukraine expert scheduled to appear as part of Trump impeachment inquiry

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a top Trump administration Ukraine expert, is scheduled to appear before House panels Tuesday as part of the impeachment inquiry investigation. Vindman, who serves as the director for European Affairs for the National Security Council, is the first person to appear before the panels who listened to the July 25 phone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — the event at the center of the House's impeachment investigation.Vindman twice notified superiors about concerns that the president and those working for him were linking foreign aid to Ukraine with investigations that would help Trump politically, a push that he said could undermine U.S. national security, according to his opening statement.

High winds fueling fires, power outages in California

California's wildfire emergency is expected to worsen Tuesday due to high winds that have bedeviled the Golden State since the weekend. Pacific Gas & Electric, which has been aggressively turning off customers' power to prevent high winds from sparking wildfires, said the latest "severe wind event" could affect 35 counties and cause outages for up to 640,000 customers. More than 2 million Californians this month have been hit with outages, which have sparked the wrath of citizens and politicians. The high winds are also expected to fan the flames of the Kincade Fire in Sonoma County, which was just 5% contained Monday. The blaze has consumed 85 square miles and is responsible for displacing 180,000 of the state's 200,000 evacuees.

If the Nationals win, Game 7 will be Wednesday night.

Tentative deal reached for Chicago school support staff as teachers' strike enters day 9

Chicago has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing 7,500 school support staff, who have been striking alongside some 25,000 Chicago Public School teachers. School staff, such as bus aides and custodians represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 73, on Sunday night announced a tentative deal with the city. The tentative agreement, which will expire in 2023, must be approved by a majority of the membership. Members will vote Monday and Tuesday, said Dian Palmer, president of SEIU Local 73. But at this point, the SEIU deal won't restart classes: SEIU workers are expected to remain on the picket lines until Chicago Teachers Union also reaches a deal with City Hall.

It's been one year since the Lion Air crash that killed nearly 200 people

Tuesday marks one year since Lion Air flight 610 crashed in Indonesia claiming 189 lives. An Indonesian investigation found the Lion Air flight was doomed by a combination of aircraft design flaws, inadequate training and maintenance problems.A final accident report said the flight crashed because the pilots were never told how to quickly respond to malfunctions of the Boeing 737 Max 8 jet’s automated flight-control system. Just five months after the Indonesian crash, the same kind of malfunction caused a Max jet to crash in Ethiopia, killing all 157 people on board.Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in June, his company made a "mistake" by failing to communicate the problems it was having with software aboard its 737 Max aircraft. Muilenburg will testify before congressional committees this week for the first time about troubles with the 737 Max.
