Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has reiterated his prediction that his company will be ready with a self-driving car by 2020, but at the same time he is raising questions about whether government regulators will do their part.

Ghosn, speaking in Yokohama, Japan, said Nissan will have have vehicles equipped with autonomous driving technology, holding to the forecast he has made previously. Other automakers are now racing to join him in reaching the 2020 goal. They all are trying to catch up to Google, which has been testing its own fleet of self-driving cars.

"Our cars will be ready," Ghosn is quoted as saying by the Associated Press. He noted, however, that self-driving features would be used to enhance the driving experience, not necessarily replace the driver.

He says the bigger issue for self-driving cars could be the government role. Roads need to be prepared for the cars, with proper striping and signage. Government and the legal system need to figure liability if self-driving cars are involved in accidents.

The U.S. Transportation Department said it is trying to figure out how to speed up the connected car revolution with the goal of making roads safer. Connected cars electronically talk to each other to prevent accidents, a technology that could play a role with self-driving cars as well.
