TV tonight: 'Once Upon a Time' musical, 'American Gods'

Once Upon a Time
ABC, 8 ET/PT

Colin O'Donoghue in ABC's 'Once Upon a Time.'

Emma is getting married, which is as good as reason as any for this show to join the “special musical episode” crowd. These episodes rise and fall on the quality of the music, the singing talent of the cast — and, most importantly, the ability of the writers to make what can come off as a tiresome gimmick fit seamlessly within the show’s universe while advancing the story. On the possible upside, Once is a fantasy, so finding a reason for the characters to sing should be easier. And the show’s from Disney, which has a fairly good track record with musicals.

2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards
MTV, Spike, TVLand, 8 ET/PT

Adam DeVine hosts this fan-vote award show. The schedule includes a performance from J Balvin, Pitbull and Camila Cabello and a joint appearance by Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster, there to accept The Generation Award for the Fast & Furious franchise.

American Gods
Starz, 9 ET/PT

This trippy Starz road trip gets ever odder, as Cloris Leachman, Gillian Anderson and Orlando Jones join in as three well-played gods. There's a lot of skill at play here, but when Shadow Moon screams “I don’t have a ….clue, so give me one” at Mr. Wednesday, you may find yourself nodding your head in agreement.
