Emmys make it official: 'OITNB' is a drama

Taylor Schilling, left, and Uzo Aduba, nominated for Emmys in 2014, in "Orange Is the New Black," which is being transferred from the comedy field to drama for this year's Emmys.

The word has come down: Orange Is the New Black is getting transferred.

After the rampant category shopping during the 2014 Emmy nominations process, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced rules changes last month that draw a more defined line between comedies and dramas. It was anticipated that Netflix's prison dramedy would be affected by the rule, which considers shows over 30 minutes to be dramas.

Variety is reporting that Academy has denied the Orange producers' petition to keep the show in the comedy category, where it debuted last year. They must submit the show and its actors in the drama field for 2015.

Last year, the show earned 12 nominations, including for outstanding comedy series, and acting bids for Taylor Schilling and Kate Mulgrew. Uzo Aduba won for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of inmate Suzanne, better known as Crazy Eyes.

Should Aduba be nominated again, she may well find herself in the supporting drama actress field, thanks to another rule change: According to IMDB, Aduba is credited for having appeared in all of Season 2.

The nomination process runs from June 15-26, with the final list of nominees to be announced July 16.

The Primetime Emmy telecast airs Sept. 20 on Fox, with first-time host Andy Samberg from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
