What it's about: In her moving debut memoir, the managing editor for Life and Entertainment at USA TODAY goes on a quest of emotional discovery and healing in the wake of her mother’s suicide, looking for clues to explain her family’s heartbreak and intergenerational trauma.

The buzz: "This shines a humanizing light on a subject too often relegated to the shadows," says a starred review from Publishers Weekly.

2. "The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer," by Janelle Monáe (Harper Voyager, fiction)

What it's about: The singer and actor, with the help of collaborators, brings readers into the Afrofuturistic world of her critically acclaimed album “Dirty Computer” with a collection of speculative tales. 

The buzz:Kirkus Reviews calls it "A celebration of queer and Afrofuturist science fiction saluting creativity in difference."

3. "Deaf Utopia: A Memoir – and a Love Letter to a Way of Life," by Nyle DiMarco (William Morrow, nonfiction) 

"Deaf Utopia: A Memoir – and a Love Letter to a Way of Life," by Nyle DiMarco.

What it's about: The model, actor and winner of "America's Next Top Model" and "Dancing With the Stars" offers an inspiring memoir that's also a celebration of deaf culture: He and his twin brother were born deaf to a multigenerational deaf family.

The buzz: A starred review in Publishers Weekly calls it "an immensely inspiring story" and says, "This exuberant account isn’t to be missed."

4. "Fevered Star," by Rebecca Roanhorse (Gallery/Saga Press, fiction)

What it's about: Book No. 2 of the “Between Earth and Sky" series and sequel to “Black Sun” returns readers to The Meridian, a magical land where Serapio, Naranpa and Xiala continue their adventures.

The buzz: "An excellent second installment that adds even more detail and intrigue," says a starred review from Kirkus Reviews.

5. "Jill: A Biography of the First Lady," by Julie Pace and Darlene Superville (Little, Brown, nonfiction)

What it's about: Associated Press journalists Pace and Superville offer a deep dive into the personal and political life of first lady Jill Biden in this deeply reported biography of the woman who holds the Biden family together.

The buzz: "This well-mannered biography has few surprises," says Publishers Weekly.
