Drive On: Build your own military Humvee

Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY
This one is the real thing: A US soldier drives a Humvee from a military cargo plane upon its landing at the airport in Port-au-Prince on Jan., 19, 2010.

Now you can build the latest Army Humvee.

AM General, which originated the go-anywhere military vehicle, is selling a kit of its latest C-Series for civilians.

The company says "all the basics are supplied — aircraft-quality aluminum riveted body, exceptionally durable chassis, and a basic soft top structure that screams "off–road ready."

It's being priced at $59,995, but one big element is missing: the engine. You have to dredge up your own powerplant and perhaps someone to build the kit as well. AM General has signed up several around the country.

When its completed, the C-Series is capable of a 2–ton payload and will be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds. It has four–wheel independent suspension with geared hubs for negotiating boulders and the most rugged terrain.
